Torres then argues that television of the 1990s encouraged viewers to identify with police against putatively criminal blacks, even in its dramatizations of police brutality.

Torres's pioneering analysis makes distinctive contributions to its fields. It challenges television scholars to consider the historical centrality of race to the constitution of the medium's genres, visual conventions, and industrial structures. And it displaces the analytical focus on stereotypes that has hamstrung assessments of television's depiction of African Americans, concentrating instead on the ways in which African Americans and their political collectives have actively shaped that depiction to advance civil rights causes. This book also challenges African American studies to pay closer and better attention to television's ongoing role in the organization and disorganization of U.S. racial politics.

Required reading for the PMP? NOT! A must buy though ...

This book used to be on PMI's recommended reading list for PMP preparation (I am not sure if it still is). The book does not use any complicated terminology and is written using an easy to read writing style. But the concepts will be easier to understand when you become an experienced project manager. If you read it at the beginning of your career, I recommend that you keep this in mind and not be disappointed. Just hold on to the copy and you will appreciate it later when you have more overall knowledge of project management.
The book is literally a compilation of 8 of the best papers on project management ever published. Hence the papers can be read independently. If you are a student at some University, you should be able to trace the individual papers to their source in your University library and print them at a much lower cost than the price of this book. The price was the only disappointment for me and since I am not a student, I couldn't do what I suggested above.
The eight different topics addressed by these papers in the book are -
1. Conflict Management
2. Contract Administration
3. Negotiating
4. Time and Stress Management
5. Team Building
6. PM Roles and Responsibilities
7. Organizational Development Approach
8. Organizing for Project Management
Based on my own personal background, I found the first five topics noted above the most interesting and the topic on Time and Stress Management the most useful. A lot of people I have talked to have not really found the time to read this book before taking the PMP but I would recommend reading it thoroughly once you have passed the PMP. I am finding that this book provides a very useful way to consolidate one's PM knowledge. PMI publishes 'Project Management Journal' and 'PM Network' on a regular basis that are also absolutely essential for any project manager. I have actually kept these publications from years back and they are one of the most prized possessions of my PM library. Enjoy reading these papers and the above mentioned publications!

This Book May Save Lives

In “Saving Wild,” the 50 conservationists' easily-to-read, brief and to the point words on How to Stay Inspired are truly inspiring as well as educational. I learned many things about improving and saving the lives of animals around the world. For example, I had no idea there was an International Fund for Animal Welfare in China. In addition, Lori Robinson’s introductory bios for the conservationists were succinct and informative. Although the book is filled with wonderful writings, one conservationist, Colleen Begg, who currently focuses on African lions, said what I think we can all take to heart: “People can learn to care.” This book is an important accomplishment in that direction.

Don't binge-read; savour it slowly

Sometimes it’s hard not to feel disheartened in the face of climate change, biodiversity loss, overexploitation and wildlife trafficking. In ‘Saving Wild’ Lori Robinson has put together a collection of inspirational messages from conservationists and activists around the world. You’ll find thoughts on nature’s ability to bounce back, the need to live sustainably (starting in our own back yard), and why living in a world without wildlife is too awful to contemplate. Perhaps my favourite contribution is from author Will Stolzenburg, who says, “My formula for keeping hope in a world of despair is to step away from the keyboard, pick up the binoculars and walk out the door.” Because only by appreciating nature and wilderness can we care enough to protect it.
This isn’t a book to binge-read; rather savour it slowly, dipping in to one or two comments a day and taking time to absorb the message.

this book is for those of you who are working to make a difference in the world, and are discouraged at times due to a feeling that it is uphill battle. the wisdom from these amazing 50 environmentalists about what inspires them, in the face of the discouragement, has the power to completely change your worldview to one of empowerment and to re-enegergize your efforts -- it certainly has mine. this wisdom is timely, as many of us feel that we are at a tipping point with regard to the state of the planet.

About the Author
Denys Parsons was the grandson of actor-manager Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree. He originally worked in the field of scientific research and invention. He then became a film-maker and finally ended up as the Press Officer for the British Library.

A book of many laughs

This is a very silly book and will definitely make you chuckle if not laugh-out-loud! The mis-prints, bloopers and newspaper screw-ups are separated into various chapters such as; Animals, In the Kitchen, The Church (these always prove to be funny, though unintentional in most cases!), Medical and Scientific, Education, Sport, etc. A few examples are as follows: from a Cleveland paper, " he had the privilege also of viewing a number of rare Egyptian tummies." and, sign seen at a Cumberland church," This is the gate of heaven/ Enter ye all by this door/ This door is kept locked because of the draft." Ad in weekly paper: " Pedigree Pup Pies, price 10 guineas each." In the Marriage section, " The bride was very upset when one of her little attendants accidently stepped on her brain and tore it." As you can see, proofreading is very important, but not necessarily adhered to, one slip turns an otherwise legible sentence or phrase into gibberish, albeit funny and amusing gibberish! I love these types of book because they are easy to read and a pleasant way to pass a few minutes, whether you commute regularly or, like me, are crippled and must spend a good deal of time in bed. Plus, laughing is good for your health and soul! Get a copy of this book and enjoy some silly fun.

This is the funniest book ever published. I say that after a long career of looking for, reading, and collecting funny books. I keep a copy of it--and of its predecessors back to the original, W. W. Scott's Breaks: Unintentional Laughs by Tired Newspaper Men and Others (New York 1931)--on my desk and at my bedside. No matter how rotten my day has been, a random selection from It Must Be True makes me laugh almost instantly. Whenever I visit a retirement home or even a hospital, I take a copy with me--and every time it proves its subtitle. These are, literally, howlers. Get yourself a copy.
