A must read for everyone

This book should be part of the curriculum in every grade school. This book describes exactly how I use apps like Instagram and Facebook and what is going on in the back of my mind. I would guess that’s the case for most people judging by what my friends post. Everyone who spends time using social media apps should read this book. The author describes why I habitually open social media apps every time I’m bored for a minute and why I feel like I instantly need to look at each new notification the second it arrives no matter what I'm busy with when it arrives. It makes sense that the social media companies make their apps addicting so people spend more time using them and looking at the advertisements which makes them more money the more you use the app.

Let me first start by saying that this article does not intend to discourage you from sight reading. In fact, we teach the basics of sight reading even before exploring the techniques of playing by ear. For those of you who don't know what sight reading is, it is the ability to read songs from sheet music. Although this is a wonderful skill to have, if one does not know the theory behind what they are playing, it will create several disadvantages:

Easy way to play by ear!

A previous reviewer had the primary complaint that this book did not come with the CD. It's true that this doesn't come with a CD, but purchasing the book through hear and play dot com will provide you with software to help you better understand the material. I have found this book to be very helpful in helping me understand what musicians on the radio are playing, and with a little time I can now sit at the piano and play the melody and parts of the bass. Most songs follow a simple format so once you understand basic chord progressions, you can start playing songs on the radio without sheet music. Understanding the scales helps you create your own melodies with the songs you play along with. (This book teaches scales quite well). This self-guided course takes you from the fundamentals of music theory to the complex 11th and 13th chords. It ends with teaching you how to create chords from a melody. Each chapter builds upon the previous, and there are many exercises included to help you understand the material.
Playing piano or any instrument by ear does not come overnight, and you have to take the time to study and practice it. Following the lessons in this book and applying it to your instrument will definitely move you forward in your musical goals.

An Essential Reference

Even though Lightroom is one of the more friendly pieces of image processing software around, there are still times when a user can't remember how to do something, or guesses that there might be a better way to do it, or really wants to delve deeper into one of its functions. That is where Martin Evening comes in.

This book provides a comprehensive look at Lightroom's functions. It's more like an encyclopedia than an instruction manual. Oh, there are chapters available that follow right along with the Lightroom workflow process from intake to output. It is possible to introduce one's self to Lightroom with this book. But unlike, say, Scott Kelby's The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom CC Book for Digital Photographers (Voices That Matter), there are no tutorials as such. Instead the entries read more like an encyclopedia, although arranged by workflow rather than alphabet. One really needs to know a little bit about how Lightroom works before this book proves most useful. If you don't you may not even know what to look up.

This book comes into its own once you start using the software. There is even an appendix that includes a section on hacking Lightroom. (Don't do it; as Evening explains there are easier, less dangerous ways to customize the software.) The author often illustrates his points with images showing the starting point and the effect of an adjustment that was made.

An example of Evening's going a step beyond is his discussion of camera calibration. He not only explains what Lightroom camera calibration is, but even tells you how to create a custom calibration. (Even though I've tried the process, I'm quite happy with the Adobe Standard Calibration, but if exact color matching is important to you, this could prove useful.)

I've kept a copy of prior versions next to my computer and referred to it whenever I had a question. Evening hasn't failed me yet. I expect to do so with the current volume. If I were beginning Lightroom, I wouldn't try to learn from this book, but as a regular user of Lightroom, I wouldn't be without it.

Simply the best

I own many Photoshop and Lightroom how to books, and Martin Evening pens by far the most comprehensive and well organized of them all. Evening is the only writer I know of that would get full price out of me. No silly jokes every paragraph, no back tracking, just enough illustration and simply spot on guidance. Its a lot of reading if that's the way you learn. I go into the program (Lightroom CC in this example) and use the index to cover my questions, and it works well for me. There are free resources online, but the depth of Mr Evening's knowledge is worth what you will spend on this book. Newbies and seasoned pros can get a lot from this. If learning Lightroom CC quickly and to the max is important, get this book!

A Beautiful and Comprehensive Volume for All Lightroom Users

I received Martin Evening's book in hopes to improve my abilities with Lightroom CC/6. I have been a LR user since LR3, and thought I had explored most of the program quite sufficiently for my needs. I didn't realize how much of the program I'd missed, including shortcuts, time-saving processes, and editing techniques that would have vastly improved my skills and my photo outputs, had I made use of a book like this one.

I am very impressed by the high-quality of this volume. Each page features elegant layout, color photographs, and in-depth examples and illustrations. It is a pure joy to reach anywhere in this book, to any page, and discover something new about the program that I use every day. The examples and techniques also give me fresh inspiration to reconsider edits I've done in the past. Not only do I want to revisit aspects of my photography, but I also now want to explore some of my ideas all over again. In short, I am inspired and excited to use this book as my companion for photography.

From start to finish, this book covers all possible types of photography, library organization, mobile features, and all output modules. It also goes very in-depth with all aspects of the develop module, including detailing many techniques for color and black and white editing. It provides comprehensive examples for all types and styles of editing, and RAW file format concepts (including camera calibration and RAW color editing).

Whether you are a beginner or experienced Lightroom user, amateur or professional, Martin Evening's book will offer techniques, ideas, and training to elevate your skills. I am convinced that no matter at what level your photography may be, this book will improve your style. It will improve your abilities in the entire gamut of photography, from choosing the right settings in your camera and creating a composition based on your vision, to organizing and editing your photos. It will help you create web-pages, books, contact sheets, or any other kind of output you may desire from your photography. Packed with journal articles - not exactly an "Encyclopaedia"

If you're too busy to visit a library for Chinese-English or English-Chinese translation papers, this is the one to stay in your collection. This is not a subject by subject encyclopaedic book, rather it's a one-stop book that contains categorized articles.

I usually look for the subject I need and in most cases I can get at least one or two published articles about the issue that I'm interested in.

Most articles already appeared in other journals. This compliation gives a handy all-in-one academic reference to a comprehensive list of translation-related issues.

Mind you this is not a very new book, but quite worth it if you need to do substantial research work in the subject matter.

Growth Juice is not your average educational book. It is a fast, easy read with short concise chapters and added cartoons to make this educational read a fun read as well. This book has given me an intimate knowledge of solution selling. The sales strategies highlighted in this book have given me a better understanding of the dos and do nots of the marketing and sales world. Regardless of whether you are a student trying to venture into the sales profession, a teacher trying to educate students or a sales professional trying to elevate your work, there are many things to take away from Growth Juice.

Great way to learn sales strategy

Dr. Weber's book is one of the best sales book I've seen. It goes in-depth into the sales process, from the very beginning until the deal is done and beyond. Far from boring, it does this as a fun and inviting story while still giving substantive facts. I never thought I'd actually enjoy learning about sales but this book has totally changed my opinion. The solution-selling approach is the best I've seen, and it shows that although it helps to have charisma and natural selling ability, it is equally or even more important to have a structured selling approach. I can't recommend this book highly enough!

Growth Juice is a refreshing change to your average text book. The chapters are short and concise to keep your interest. In addition to teaching the reader how to handle any sales situation, there is an interesting story line with characters in the chapters. I have found myself using the techniques I learn from class in interviews and in my job. Sales knowledge will be beneficial in every position. I am incredibly glad that I purchased this book and will definitely be keeping it with me in my job next year.

Prefer Secular Reading

I thought it was just a book on friendship. The first line was "It's fun to be a kid in God's wonderful world ." I didn't think you would have to be of any particular religion to read this book. Other than that, the book seems fine but I probably will be disinclined to read it to my kids. I would have bought a different book if I had known.
