Helpful to First Time Mom
By A Customer
As a first time mom, I found this book to be very helpful, particularly the tables on identifying what different cries and their sounds mean (and what to do about them). Between this book and Dr. Harvey Karp's book, I feel like I have a calmer baby as a result. It's a short read, inexpensive and worth it.

A sweet treat for the holiday season.

The Christmas Pageant
By D. River
5 stars

Yes! Not only a totally sweet Christmas time romance, but a full-on acknowledgement of bisexual reality in a world where too many people (gay and straight) pretend it’s not a real thing.

Plus D. River (whom I know as Chris O’Guinn, writer of awesome YA books) also manages to break down some stereotypes (even ones I want to be true).

Troy Swenson left a career in the army to take care of his much younger brother Matt when their parents were killed. He’s snagged a great job at the Brentsen Academy, as well as a place for his sibling. But Troy’s worried. Not only did he get stuck managing the Christmas pageant, but his son managed to get into a fight with another student, Tommy Douglas.

As it turns out, Taylor Douglas and his son Tommy are also new to the area, and Tommy’s punishment is helping Troy on the pageant. Things begin to look more hopeful, but Taylor has a few surprises of his own, and Troy isn’t sure he can cope.

This is no big drama. It’s small and intimate and gentle and surprisingly real. River gives his men complexity and his boys age-appropriate attitudes. It challenges some pre-conceived notions and offers up the kind of romance I wish Hollywood would produce.

This was a sweet holiday story that hit all the right notes without going into cheesy territory.

As a single dad myself I’m a sucker for good stories featuring such characters. Here we have two single parents; Troy Swenson who left the army to raise his brother, and Taylor Douglas.

The two men meet when Troy’s brother and Taylor’s son get into a fight at school. They become friends when Taylor offers to help Troy with the Christmas Pageant he’s in charge of.

The relationship between Taylor and Troy builds slowly at just the exact right pace. There’s a bit of a miscommunication when Taylor tries to kiss Troy but it’s easily fixed once Troy does the adult thing and actually talks to Taylor about the situation.

The supporting characters, mainly the teen boys, were realistic and I enjoyed how their relationship went from rivals to friends. The scene at the pageant is especially heartwarming.

This was an enjoyable holiday tale.

Racketty-Packetty dolls undismayed by time's changes
By Ellen Etc.
The doll family in the old dollhouse doesn't mind when Cynthia gets Tidy Castle as a present, even when she dismisses their house as Racketty-Packetty House and sticks it behind the door. They had fallen from the "gay and fashionable life" and become shabby over the years since Cynthia's Grandmamma first owned them, but it does not dampen their spirits one bit! They dance in circles until they're hysterical and all fall down laughing, and have much more fun than the lords and ladies in Tidy Castle.

When Cynthia gives the Tidy Castle dolls scarlet fever, the old dolls are quite kind-hearted to their fancy neighbors and all manage to become friends. But when Cynthia expects an important visitor and wants the nurse to burn Racketty-Packetty house, things look quite serious, even for the ever-optimistic old doll family. Fortunately, Queen Crosspatch and her Fairies are quite fond of the Racketty-Packetty dolls, and they will find a way to save Racketty-Packetty House.

This is one of the goofiest, most frenetic doll books ever. See if you can find a copy with the wonderful illustrations by Harrison Cady.

Wonderful tale
By Ruellia
This is a very fast paced story with wonderful characters and a constant stream of inventive incidents and plot swerves that keeps things jumping. The Kindle Frances Hodgson Burnett Collection (which has 33 of her works including Racketty Packetty House), kept the Cady illustrations which are wonderful. The dolls are charming and it is a great story. I just finished rereading it and I enjoyed it as much as I did as a child, with more appreciation now for the story telling art and also for the moral of the tale: keep your chin up, never give up, and make the best of things.

How Well Do Facts Travel?: The Dissemination of Reliable KnowledgeFrom Cambridge University Press

Why write about facts? Facts are everywhere. They litter the utterances of public life as much as the private conversations of individuals. They frequent the humanities and the sciences in equal measure. But their very ubiquity tells us not only why it is difficult to form general but sensible answers in response to seemingly simple questions about facts, but also why it is important to do so. This book discusses how facts travel, and when and why they sometimes travel well enough to acquire a life of their own. Whether or not facts travel in this manner depends not only on their character and ability to play useful roles elsewhere, but also on the labels, packaging, vehicles, and company that take them across difficult terrains and over disciplinary boundaries. These diverse stories of traveling facts, ranging from architecture to nanotechnology and from romance fiction to climate science, change the way we see the nature of facts. Facts are far from the bland and rather boring but useful objects that scientists and humanists produce and fit together to make narratives, arguments, and evidence. Rather, their extraordinary abilities to travel well - and to fly flags of many different colors in the process - shows when, how, and why facts can be used to build further knowledge beyond and away from their sites of original production and intended use.

Review
"This fascinating interdisciplinary collection arising from an extraordinary international collaboration is a significant and innovative contribution to a crucial question in science and technology studies: what do we mean by a 'fact'? New light is thrown on this old question by a fresh focus on the transmission and transformation of facts between different contexts, with very welcome attention to neglected subject areas, too. It is an intellectual feast of a volume, with plenty of food for thought for historians, philosophers, and natural and social scientists, especially those who are uncomfortable sitting in conventional disciplinary pigeonholes."
- Hasok Chang, University of Cambridge

"This is a lively and diverse collection of essays about the lives of facts: 'shared pieces of knowledge that hold the qualities of being autonomous, short, specific and reliable.' The book is not so much about what facts are, but about what makes them travel - across space, time, and social worlds - and what gives them character. Focusing on the engaging question, what makes some facts travel well, that is, with integrity, yet with the ability to be put fruitfully to new uses, the book provides such a rich survey of curious, prosaic, profound, and false - as well as true - facts that readers will want to try their hand at grand theorizing, which the authors have politely and wisely refrained from doing. It will be an interesting experiment to see how well these facts about facts travel, and where."
- James Griesemer, University of California, Davis

"How Well Do Facts Travel? accomplishes the uncommon feat of bringing fresh thinking to a most common phenomenon. Far more than merely contextualizing the use of 'facts' in myriad fields, this eye-opening and deeply thoughtful collection of essays sets facts in motion, models their dynamics, and maps their travels. Adventurous yet grounded, the group of scholars engages and challenges assumptions in disciplines ranging from history and archaeology to economics and policy to biology and design."
- Randall Mason, University of Pennsylvania

"Stemming from a five-year group multidisciplinary research project, How Well Do Facts Travel? is a welcome and insightful contribution to the growing bodies of scholarship on comparative and historical epistemology, cultural and technological transfer, social networking, and the philosophies of the social and physical sciences. As with the work of Daston, Poovey, and Latour, this diverse and compelling collection of essays will be as usefully provocative to scholars in the arts and humanities as it will to those in the sciences."
- Mark A. Meadow, University of California, Santa Barbara; Leiden University, the Netherlands

"How Well Do Facts Travel? provides an usual perspective on science and its communication by dealing with the 'lives of facts' and their constitution, development, and circulation, in disciplines as diverse as architecture and social psychology, climate science, and gerontology."
- Staffan Mueller-Wille, University of Exeter

"How Well Do Facts Travel? edited by Peter Howlett and Mary S. Morgan is an impressive exploration - interdisciplinary in character - of the circulation of 'facts' in a number of areas spanning both the natural and social sciences and the humanities as well. Science studies abound in work on the vagaries of metaphors, models, and images. Curiously, so far, facts have hardly been included in this list. Peter Howlett and Mary Morgan's assessment of less the production of facts but what makes them travel and how traveling transforms them opens a new horizon. The authors of the volume address the topic with subtleness and sovereignty, covering a broad range of carefully chosen case studies."
- Hans-Jörg Rheinberger, Director, the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science, Berlin

"Philosophers of science have long talked about fruitfulness as a criteria of scientific merit. This collection asks how ideas - or facts - actually get to be recognized and used; it is a major contribution that greatly deepens this important problem."
- Stephen P. Turner, University of South Florida

"....The authors explore the ties and the tensions between "integrity" and "fertility" of travel, involving a dialogue of replication and variation.... a variety of perspectives on the problem of travel, presented in papers, often attractively written, that take seriously their particular topics."
>-Theodore M. Porter, University of California, Los Angeles, SCIENCE

"....This superb volume is for all sociologists and philosophers of science, policy planners, and yes, scientists.... Highly recommended...."
>-D.B. Boersema, Pacific University, CHOICE

Wide and Varied Anthology
By Bridgette Eichelberger
How Well Do Facts Travel was assigned as a textbook in my critical thinking/writing class, and I felt that it was interesting in places, but some of the discussion felt incredibly abstract, especially Morgan's extended introduction.

The bulk of the book is written by a variety of authors on a host of real-world topics that deal with the slippery, tricky thing that we call a fact. The connecting thread that binds the narratives together is the abstract idea of a fact: how facts are created, transmitted, received, etc., and the many difficulties surrounding every stage in the process.

In my opinion, the most interesting section is Part Two: Matters of Fact, which deals with facts that are present in material objects. Valeriani's discussion of the facts embedded in ancient artifacts is especially noteworthy, as is Oreskes' piece on misinformation on global warming.

Through the use of these individual essays, Morgan and Howlett show that the definition of fact is something that researchers in every field, from history to climate science, must struggle with. This book is extremely thought provoking, and raises many more questions than it answers. It was perfect fodder for our discussion-based class.

This fascinating pastiche of studies about facts is an archetype of opinion, prejudice and nearly fanatical belief written by credentialed scholars drubbing their favorite whipping boys from climate change "deniers" to ancient Greek forms in American nineteenth-century architecture and pretending to be objective.
The giveaway, however, is that the scholars in How Well Do Facts Travel treat facts as objects having existence outside their minds, instead of being statements about existence outside their minds, a distinction that more careful scholars diligently observe. The distinction may sound trivial at first blush, but deeper study shows it to be crucial for critical thinking. Existence does not care what scholars think about it and does not change because of a scholar's findings or opinions. Any and all statements about existence, however, are subject to argument and challenge. Keeping that distinction at the forefront of thought prevents the reader from falling prey to undetected bias, appeals to authority, self-righteous censorship of opposing views, and other lurking intellectual bullying.
Conversely, How Well Do Facts Travel treats facts as if they were objects that exist outside the authors' minds by asking how well they travel. How silly it would appear if stated as How Well Do Statements Travel.
All sixteen essays comprising this book treat facts as objects and put forward the author's opinion as if it were a solid thought, an object, a physical thing, undeniable, unchallengeable, incontrovertible, an expression of absolute truth. When read as a collection of deliberate efforts to dress the author's opinion as absolute truth, this book is highly entertaining as an example of scholarly hubris and the splendid isolation of the community of scholars.
The fifth essay, "My Facts Are Better Than Your Facts" by Harvard Professor of the History of Science Naomi Oreskes, however, deserves further comment: In a highly detailed examination of the original late-1980s "climate denier" campaign by Western Fuels Association, Oreskes bases her evaluation on a set of source documents she claims to be in the archive of the American Meteorological Society, whose archivist states that no such documents ever existed in their possession. However, Greenpeace has posted an online collection of the documents Oreskes uses as sources.
Further, Oreskes made no attempt to fact check with the parties who conducted the Western Fuels campaign, who were all identified in the source documents, and who had never heard of and have never heard from Naomi Oreskes. The parties involved in the campaign pointed out that the "incriminating" document at the center of Oreskes scathing denunciation of "paid shills of the coal industry" was actually a never-used proposal for a campaign by Cambridge Reports commissioned by Edison Electric Institute, which was confirmed by EEI's executive in a recent contact. The Oreskes chapter is based on a misconstruction of the source documents, which could have been corrected by direct fact checking with the involved parties. A newspaper reporter would not have filed such a report without contacting the parties involved.
One might read the Oreskes chapter wondering how a credentialed, supremely intelligent historian of science could or would publish without confirmation, and how the publisher could or would publish without fact checking with the sources.
Despite this critique, I consider this book well worth the read for the writing talent and breadth of knowledge of the chapter authors. They explore realms ignored elsewhere and that alone deserves respect. Consider this review as a cautionary tale and a recommendation to read How Well Do Facts Travel. It's also an invitation to write your own review.

The Saint Meets his Match (The Saint Series), by Leslie Charteris

For many years the Saint was at war equally with criminals and the law. That led to trouble, and one day the Saint finally made his peace with the law and joined Scotland Yard. The next day he met the rather lovely leader of a gang and joined her in a venture so daring that before it was accomplished, the Saint found himself facing the wrong end of a gun belonging to a commissioner at Scotland Yard.

About the Author

Leslie Charteris was born in Singapore on May 12th, 1907. With his mother and brother, he moved to England in 1919 and attended Rossall School in Lancashire before moving on to Cambridge University to study law. His studies there came to a halt when a publisher accepted his first novel. His third book, entitled Meet the Tiger!, was written when he was twenty years old and published in September 1928. It introduced the world to Simon Templar, aka the Saint.

He continued to write about the Saint until 1983 when the last book, Salvage for the Saint, was published. The books, which have been translated into over thirty languages, number nearly a hundred and have sold over 40 million copies around the world. They’ve inspired, to date, fifteen feature films, three TV series, ten radio series, and a comic strip that was written by Charteris and syndicated around the world for over a decade. He enjoyed travelling but settled for long periods in Hollywood, Florida, and finally in Surrey, England. He was awarded the Cartier Diamond Dagger by the Crime Writers’ Association in 1992, in recognition of a lifetime of achievement. He died the following year.

Saint Saga #07
By Paul Magnussen
"She Was a Lady" (aka "The Saint Meets His Match" aka "The Angels of Doom") is one of the few Saint books from this period not to feature Patricia Holm. The reason, apparently, is that it was originally not a Saint story, but was adapted from one written before the author settled on the Saint as his protagonist of choice.

Nevertheless, the adaptation of this full-length story (concerning a battle of wits with a girl out to revenge the framing and consequent suicide of her father) is a thorough one. The Saint's constant adversary Claud Eustace Teal is fully integrated into the story, which is told with the author's usual acerbic wit; and Slinky Dyson and Snake Ganning (both from Enter the Saint) make cameo appearances.

And at the end we find out that the Saint and James Bond have more in common than we suspected.

Actually, Jill Trelawney Meets Her Match
By Karen Amrhein
"The Saint Meets His Match" (AKA "Angels of Doom") is a solid early Saint novel. It's no match for "The Saint in New York", but it is engaging and witty. The book has some surprising twists, including which side of the law The Saint is working for, and a few harrowingly exciting scenes, including one in a cave where the water is rising and Simon and Jill are enchained. The Saint finds his way in and out of trouble in the usual extraordinary ways. (If he's always extraordinary, is that still extraordinary? I guess so, in comparison to everyone else, yes!)
If you like Saint books, this is a fine addition to your library. If you're just curious, or dipping your toes in the pool for the first time, try "The Saint in New York".

Dragonbreath #3: Curse of the Were-wiener, by Ursula Vernon

Danny Dragonbreath and his best friend Wendell thought the hot dog from the school cafeteria looked a little . . . off. Then things got weird when the hot dog bit Wendell, and weirder still when Wendell started to sprout back hair. Could Wendell be morphing into a . . . (cue ominous music) were-wiener? All evidence points to yes. And unless he and Danny can get past the lunch ladies and slay the alpha-wurst, the whole school could be infected.

Written in Ursula Vernon's trademark hybrid style of comic-book panels and text, this is the thrilling third book in the series. In a starred review, Kirkus Reviews said Dragonbreath "will leave readers in stiches- and on tenterhooks waiting for the next one." Curse of the Were-Wiener will make kids everywhere laugh, shriek, and take a closer look at their lunches. Perfect for fans of Wimpy Kid and Bad Kitty.

From Booklist
In this third Dragonbreath adventure, Danny first realizes there’s something wrong with his school cafeteria hot dog, and then the hot dog bites his best friend, Wendell. When Wendell and other students start itching, growing hair, and staring at the moon, Danny knows he has to find and destroy the main were-wiener. This time around, Vernon uses black, white, green, and red in the comic-like panels and illustrations that accompany the prose text. The book is just spooky enough for young readers who don’t want to get too scared, and it features the return of the monster potato salad. Grades 3-5. --Kat Kan

About the Author

Great Comic Novel Book
By Book Sake
This book is meant for kids a little bit younger than me, but it was still a fun read. I was able to read it quickly and it was entertaining the whole way through. I liked the format of mixing in regular novel writing along with some comic type pages mixed in. The illustrations are cute and add something interesting to the book, especially for those that don't like to read so much. I didn't know what two-color illustrations were when starting this book, but it's what the artist used through out and it was all that was needed for the pictures. (FYI Red and green were the only colors used, even though there are black & white photos as well...those don't count as colors since it's pen and the white space of the page.)

This is book 3 of the series and I haven't read book 1 or 2 (Dragonbreath and Dragonbreath: Attack of the Ninja Frogs), but it didn't seem to be a problem as the story stood well on it's own. They do mention some of their previous adventures within the story, but it adds to it instead of taking away. I'd recommend this book for the pre-teen kids out there.

"Dragonbreath Rocks!", said the 8 yr old boy
By K.Day
Our 8 yr old son LOVED the Dragon Breath series because they make him "Laugh his head off!". He has read every book in the series, a few of them in a day. When asked why he likes these books he said "Because they have good characters, are funny, adventurous, and the story lines are crazy - crazy AWESOME!". All of theses things make this book and the others in the series incredibly interesting to a kiddo who enjoys funny adventures.

As a parent I appreciate that they are funny without being totally stupid and that they are easy to read without being "dumbed down". I would say the reading level is higher than Big Nate but not as high as say Harry Potter. These are great transition books for readers who need a bit more of a challenge. However they are also great for more advanced readers who just want to read a great story about an amazing adventure.

Overall a great series and I would highly recommend for the 8-9 yr old set.

My Favourite Dragonbreath Book Yet!
By Nicola Mansfield
Reason for Reading: Next in the series. Actually I was sitting down to read #4, when it dawned on me that I hadn't read #3! Somehow I'd missed it amongst all the books, so getting my priorities in order I'm reading #3, then #4!

Well, the storyline for this book is just plain silliness, but I have to say it is my favourite one so far! Wendell always brings his own lunch to school, but Danny notices that the hot dogs in today's cafeteria lunch are an incredibly bright red colour. He passes it to Wendell for him to see and the hot dog bites him! Needless to say Danny passes on hot dogs that day. A few days later Wendell shows Danny that he has hair growing on his back and they figure it is from the hot dog bite. It is really itchy and as they look around, about half the school student body and staff are itching like crazy. They set off to find out what was in those wiener's and find a package in the cafeteria. They are not regular wieners but "were-wieners" that have gone feral! It's up to Danny and Wendell to kill the Alpha-wurst, thus saving them all from lycanthropy.

A totally out there plot that is absolutely hilarious! One of the fun things is that since Wendell has been bit, every now and then he goes under the spell of the call of the moon and tries to bite Danny. This total role reversal of their characters is a great laugh and the humour in the book abounds as well as being carefully timed within the graphic panels. As usual this book is part text and part graphic panels, usually called a hybrid. What more can I say? Danny Dragonbreath fans are going to love this addition to the series and it will have them clamouring for more. Thankfully, there is book #4 to look forward to, Lair of the Bat Monster!
