About the Author
Richard Bullock (Ph.D., University of Virginia) is emeritus professor of English at Wright State University, where he directed the writing programs for twenty-eight years and designed the university's writing across the curriculum program and Introduction to College Writing Workshop. In 2012, he was awarded the Trustees' Award for Faculty Excellence, Wright State's highest honor. In addition to The Norton Field Guide to Writing, he is a coauthor of The Little Seagull Handbook.

Maureen Daly Goggin (Ph.D., Carnegie Mellon University) is professor of English and former associate chair of the English Department at Arizona State University, where she has also directed several of the writing programs and the Ph.D. program in Rhetoric, Composition, and Linguistics and received the ASU Alumni Association Faculty Teaching Award. She is the author of Authoring a Discipline: Scholarly Journals and the Post-World War II Emergence of Rhetoric and Composition (2000).

Francine Weinberg (M.Ed, Teachers College, Columbia University) is an author and editor who has worked for more than thirty years on college and high school English textbooks. She is the author of the handbook in The Norton Field Guide to Writing and a coauthor of The Little Seagull Handbook.

Jessica Gunderson grew up in the small town of Washburn, North Dakota. She has a bachelor's degree from the University of North Dakota and an MFA in Creative Writing from Minnesota State University, Mankato. She has written more than fifty books for young readers. political greatness until
an FBI sting killed his career...

For more than half a century, Gordon Walgren, lawyer, legislator and
lobbyist, has been a major player in Kitsap County politics. At 25, he won election as county prosecutor. It looked as though his political future was dead after he lost a notorious case. It didn’t help that he was romantically involved with the accused’s mistress. Then opportunity knocked and Walgren quickly re-climbed the political ladder. By 1975 he was Senate majority leader. Five years later, he was clearly ticketed for statewide office, attorney general and then, who knows?

It all came undone as a result of Gamscam, an FBI sting that ensnared
Walgren, the speaker of the house and a lobbyist. Charged with
racketeering, the three were accused of conspiring with men they believed
were mobsters to loosen state gambling laws. They did it for a piece of the
profits, the government said.

The case against Walgren was the thinnest, but a jury convicted
him along with the others. He spent two years in a federal prison.
He never admitted guilt and never stopped fighting to clear his name.
On his release, he successfully petitioned to win back his law license,
to overturn all but one conviction and to rebuild his reputation.

A great historical biography

I really enjoyed this book, being a Washington state and Kitsap County resident. It is an interesting historical account of local and state politics in the 1970’s and '80’s. It also is an autobiography of a remarkable man, Gordon Walgren, who had a meteoric rise before he was stung. It was nice to go back in time to the day when these things were going on and Dixie Lee Ray was governing, if you wish to call it that.
