He gives a clear and very informative story of the origin of his ancestors, who founded the Tucker Kingdom in the Sherbro region of Sierra Leone, their wealth and power, as well as their relationship with the British Crown. In his peculiar modest way, he describes his life and successes in his beloved St. Edwards School and his triumphs at Fourah Bay College. He entered the Public Service of Sierra Leone in 1955, and in the year of Independence he was deployed in the Prime Minister's Office, where he was given the responsibility of recruiting and training Sierra Leoneans to replace the expatriate staff of the colonial administration and for the transformation of the Civil Service into one for an Independent State. He describes the way he did it and the immense satisfaction he found in serving his country well at that important turning point in its history. The Author also gives an insider's account of the 1967 General Elections and the conflict arising therefrom. He candidly describes the events of that period and refutes many of the speculations, distortions and guesses about what really happened in those few days. Working with the NRC, with all the eccentricities of Brigadier Juxon-Smith is an unforgettable experience, and the reader is given a glimpse of it in this book.

The old men write their memories - bravo

Peter Tucker, 88 years, shows himself as the honest administrator and law advisor he probably always was in his long life. Especially the part on the administrations of the two Margai (to both of whom he was secretary) and the elections of 1967 give clarification for me. I am surprised that there are so many older Sierra Leoneans who are now publishing their memoirs. Sama Banya, Abdul Karim Koroma, Peter Tucker, Solomon Berewa, Eldred Jones, Ahmad Tejan-Kabbah, also Macbailey Fyle's "National History of Sierra Leone" - on another level. It is wonderful and a great contribution to their country even if the number of their readers might be small. But it contributes to the historical memory of Sierra Leone.

Outstanding!

Gorgeous book with MANY illustrations of what she is talking about. This will definitely start me on doing nature drawings in my sketchbooks. I discovered this book from a wonderful artist who was teaching a vacation sketching class. She said this book inspired her to teach the sketching class. I'll refer to it over and over for the rest of my life (Well, I'm old:-)

This is a beautiful book.

The covers and pages are printed on very nice paper, the quality is excellent. If you are looking for a "how to book" this will be an excellent choice. It is full of drawings and information on how to keep a nature journal, including a wide variety of examples of drawings and things to write in your own journal. This book also teaches you how to draw and how to observe everything and anything around you. It is all and more than what I had hoped for.

Wonderful guide for a kid or adult to learn to natural journal

This guide shows how to create a gorgeous ongoing project of a nature journal. It is applicable to kids or adults, though kids might need a parent helper to read and interpret it all. Projects are given for a variety of ages or "all ages" depending on the project. No prior experience drawing is required. The examples given are inspirational without being overwhelming for those of us without a lot of native art talent. Most are shown black and white as would be common if you were out with just a pen and paper, but it also shows colored pencil or watercolor addition.

The book shows tons of examples in text and pictures how to add details such as dates, temperature conditions, scientific facts, etc., to your journal. The drawing techniques and examples could to be used to teach a child to enhance lab notebooks rather than a "journal" per se.

I use this with all my kids, and they are really taking to the idea, even now grabbing their journal without prompting to run into the yard to draw something. Nature journaling is helping them to be more aware in the world, and recognizing smaller details.

There is a companion almost blank (few notes or hints) hardcover journal that you can buy to go with this guide that I highly recommend. The HC journal is tough and withstands kids very well.

Why write another guide to observing the Moon? That was the question I was pondering as I began this project, having a fine collection of "classic" lunar guidebooks dating back to 1791 in my own library. As a Fellow of the Royal Astronomical Society (RAS), member of the American Astronomical Society's Division for Planetary Sciences (AAS DPS), and member of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), I am fortunate to know many pro­ fessionallunar scientists who keep me up to date with developments in lunar scienc- contrary to public perception, lunar science has definitely not stagnated since the last Apollo, No. 17, left the surface of the Moon in December, 1972. I am also lucky to know many amateur lunar observers, who, like me, enjoy actually looking at the Moon with tele­ scopes and imaging it with a wide variety of devices ranging from regular 35 mm cameras to video recorders and CCD cameras. My friends who study the Moon, whether in their professions or just for fun, gave me several reasons for doing "another" lunar guidebook. First, the last lunar observer's guide of any length was published over ten years ago, and many reviewers noted that it was badly out of date even then.

A Moon Observer's Handbook

Wlasuk's book is a useful reference for amateur observers and contains specific information about many lunar surface features. Illustrations are clear although some of the photography (b&w only) is inferior compared to other similar books. The book contains several observer report templates and are especially useful if the amateur is hunting for so-called Transient Lunar Phenomena, most likely venting of volcanic gas. A CD-ROM (termed a 'lunar atlas') is included. However, several features I wanted to look out were not on the CD! (I.e., the important volcanic crater Aristarchus--possibly still an active area of vulcanism on the Moon). I personally did not agree with the orthodox recounting of how the Moon formed. Fission is still a workable hypothesis. And it is clear the Apollo missions created more questions than answers about the Moon. One unresolved question not mentioned in this book is the tektite controversy. Some evidence (Apollo 12 specimen and Apollo 16 volcanic glasses) points to at least one type of tektite found on Earth as being lunar in origin. Despite these points, I still recommend this volume for your favorite "lunatic." : )

Don't Waste Your Money, There are Better Books, and Cheaper

Wlasuk's book, _Observing the Moon_ is OK if you have nothing else, but there are better references available, for less money. His illustrations are so-so and his explanations somewhat hard to follow. In many cases, his descriptions of lunar features are not illustrated, so one cannot see what he is describing. A better book for the serious lunar astronomer is Ernest Cherrington's _Exploring the Moon With Binoculars and Small Telescopes_, available on Amazon.com for about 1/3 the price of Wlasuk's book.

Paul Rosenberg has an extensive background in the construction, data, electronic, HVAC and plumbing trades. He is a leading voice in the electrical industry with years of experience from an apprentice to a project manager. Paul has written for all of the leading electrical and low voltage industry magazines and has authored more than 50 books.In addition, he wrote the first standard for the installation of optical cables (ANSI-NEIS-301) and was awarded a patent for a power transmission module. Should be spiral bound!

Lots of good info in here, although more for commercial than industrial refrigeration. I got this book today and could immediately tell two things:

1. It is going to be used a lot. The small size means it will probably be one of the few pieces of general documentation to travel.
2. The pages are going to fall out. What was the publisher thinking!!? A cheap glued binding on a useful thick reference book? The person who made that decision was hopefully fired.

Strange, mysterious little textbook. Should confuse and intimidate most students (where it does not bore, of course). Evidently this is Mr. Ballenger's idea of innovative, non-traditional pedagogy. But you know, you buy what you're told to for class.

Respect the Process

Students who don't like this book simply don't like to work. It requires a great deal of work to understand the process of writing well. It doesn't come easily. But this book makes visible all the things that go on in a good writer's head and helps students to do them, too. Poor writers believe that if they avoid writing, it will get better. It doesn't. The only thing that improves writing is writing. Reading good writing helps, but actually, writing and revision are the key. Students who find their voices are thrilled at the discovery and books like this seem to help them toward that end. I applaud the author's creativity and accessibility.
