Who knew historical romance could be this hot? Lack of communication got them apart to begin with. Madeline, who had grown up in London society, fell deepy in love for Brock five years ago. She even gave him her virginity. But Brock was nothing more than her father's stable hand then and her father paid him off so he would leave town. Or so she thought.

When she realized she had gotten pregnant, she married Lord Sedgewick to cover it up and claim the child as his. Now, with her husband's death almost a year ago and all he left behind were debts, she is left in a precarious situation. This is when Brock comes back into her life.

He's made something of himself, has money, but doesn't have the acceptance in society. He pays off her debts and proposes the deal that she'd marry him to repay him. A deal she refuses to accept. He has a lot of ulterior motives, of course: vengeance, a business venture, acceptance. But most of all he is still deeply in love with her. Even though he can't bring himself to say this to her.

Madeline doesn't want to admit she still has feelings for him, even though he makes his best attempts to seduce her. She doesn't tell him they have a daughter together either. But oh how good he is at the seduction.

While there was an incredible lack of communication between these two characters, I enjoyed every single one of their interactions and how their story slowly unfolded. They were put in a position where they had to be more intimate than they would've otherwise and face the feelings that were still there.
A story of a second chance at love. Of falling in love all over again and forgiving past and present mistakes. It kept me glued to the pages as I usually expect by this wonderful author.

Brock Taylor returned to Ashdown Manor a wealthy man. He had broken Maggie's heart five years ago when he left her to find his fortune. Maggie discovered that she was pregnant. Maggie's father made the arrangements for her to marry Lord Colin Sedgewick. Sedgewick even went as far as to have the birth certificate dated back six weeks and claimed the baby.

Maggie's husband Colin died and left her deeply in debt. Mr. Hockelspeck informed Maggie that all her late husband's bills have been paid. Brock Taylor, who broke her heart five years ago, paid Maggie's late husband's debt. However, there is a catch. In researching the idea of a passenger railroad between London and Birmingham; Brock discovered that Maggie owns a parcel of the land he needs. Brock must marry Maggie for her to claim the land that her father had left to her in retainer. And, if Maggie remarried, the land would automatically go to her husband.

The events that occurred between Maggie and Brock were very interesting. They were hot together. Maggie and Brock, during their courtship, had difficulty communicating. They were deeply in love. However, they constantly disagreed and both were stubborn. Therefore, that lead to Maggie being obstinate not to marry Brock. Brock on the other hand, was just as pigheaded as Maggie until the last chapter where he proved his love.

When Madeline Sedgewick's husband died he left her and her daughter in massive debt. She has been trying to pay the creditors for years barely scraping by enough to feed her family. Things seem to be looking up for Maddie when she discovers she no longer owes her many creditors but it doesn't take her long to discover that she now owes only one man the entire debt and there is only one thing Brock Taylor wants in return for the debt.

Brock Taylor doesn't have a drop of the blue blood that is treasured among London's ton but that hasn't stopped him from becoming a success. As a young boy he fell in love with Madeline, his love has driven him to become worthy of her. He has never gotten over the fact that she married another so soon after he left for London. Now that she is a widow he intends to make her his; if he gets status and power in the bargain all the better. Before the month is out Maddie will be his wife whether she likes it or not.

Strictly Seduction is rigorously passionate! Maddie and Brock share a long history with much emotion between them. The sizzle between them is unrelenting and potent. Shelley Bradley has written a fiery historical with magical feeling. I could not wait for all of the truths to come out in Strictly Seduction. Maddie and Brock have been kept apart long enough and I was salivating for the time when they would finally get their acts together. Strictly Seduction is ripe with rapturous romance.

Important collection of essays on culture and thought

Five stars if you're an anthropology theory junkie. For anyone else, this book may be a bit much. It's dense going, and the author assumes you know the history of ethnological theory. If you do, you will love watching Viveiros de Castro's mind flash from Amazonian cosmologies to Siberian shamans to French intellectuals to Kantian logic and back--always winding up in the Amazon rainforest with people who tell him that jaguars are perfectly human when by themselves, or in their own jaguar perspective. To a jaguar, blood is manioc beer, just as, to a tapir, his wallow is a finely decorated ceremonial hall. A cockroach may be called big game--because it is big game to a predatory wasp. Viveiros calls this view (the idea that nonhumans see themselves as the real humans, humans and other fdifferent creatures as prey or predator) perspectivism, and uses it to challenge anthropologists. It seems strange to anyone who is not an Indigenous Amazonian, but why is it strange? And how do we deal with it as a cosmology just as important, interesting, and in need of thorough and deep understanding as our own (whatever that may be)? If we want to understand humanity, or even some humans, we have to understand viewpoints like this with full seriousness and depth--not dismiss them as quaint weirdness or the like. The book deals with ways to get at understandings of other views, and with the Amazonian perspectives that stimulate Viveiros' thinking.
One particularly important set of concepts in Viveiros' thinking is noted in the title: the complex of ideas such as relative, relativity, relationship, relating, and other cognates. Viveiros sees thought and human communication as being basically about interaction and relationship. (This is straight Kantian anthropology, in spite of Viveiros saying at one point that we need to get beyond Kant.) Viveiros keeps returning to these ideas throughout the book, in many contexts.
This book consists of essays and talks delivered over many years, so it is hard to follow. Points appear in various forms, and sometimes a later essay strongly qualifies an earlier one. Some of the talks were humorous, which makes them delightful or downright quirky. Like many French thinkers (but IMHO with more success), Viveiros uses paradox, conundrum, and apparent contradiction to drive points or simply to make the reader think.
This is a very important book for anyone who wants to understand really different cultures, but be prepared to work to get the blood/manioc beer/essence out of it. I am still unpacking possible reasons why cover design shows the west end of an eastbound jaguar.

Learned some things

My boyfriend bought this for me because I enjoy writing and reading about mythical creatures. I thought it would serve as inspiration for my own writing, and though I didn't come across any creatures that were unknown to me, the book offered information about popular myths that I was unaware of. So it wasn't a complete waste of time. This book would have been greatly improved by including more rare, not-as-heard-of creatures.

This book has so much information on mythical creatures.I was looking for information on mythical creatures and I couldn't find much of anything besides books about unicorns and dragons.This book doesn't have it all but it's got an awful lot.Go order this book,even though it's out of print it's still worth the wait.

About the Author
After 20 years sales and marketing experience in the engineering, automotive and academic publishing sectors, Graham joined Leeds Business School in 1992. He is now a Principal Lecturer in Marketing teaching marketing communications and with responsiblity for postgraduate and professional courses in the School of Business Strategy. These include CIM, IDM and IPR programmes. He has been a CIM examiner in Integrated Marketing Communications for a number of years and is now Senior Examiner for this module during the period of CIM syllabus change. He is also involved with CIM as an external advisor on study centre accredition and an examiner for CIM certificated programmes. Graham has wide experience as an external examiner for marketing programmes at several other Universities and as a Subject Specialist Reviewer for the Quality Assurance Agency for Higher Education. He has presented a number of conference papers and made contributions to texts in the marketing communications field.

An excellent informative resource, Chris Fill's 'Marketing Communications' is a comprehensive yet easily readable text the content of which is suitable for both marketing student and practitioner. Now in its third edition, it has improved yet again in both structure and content with rearrangement of chapters into a more logical order and with updated content.
The text has detailed content but succeeds in achieving a theoretical authority which is translated into strategic approaches and practical application, and supported with clearly related examples and mini-case studies. The marketing communications mix and related issues are covered with focus on the individual marketing communications elements and on the critical activity of planning and managing their integration. For students of studying for marketing examinations in higher education and professional Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) / American Marketing Association (AMA) level, this is an essential study text.
For business and marketing practioners requiring a marketing communications reference text this is a valuable resource. Those who do or wish to work in specific marketing communications fields such as advertising or promotion with find this a good background springboard to more specialised reading. Christmas in Mexico

This children's book is about a five-year-old Mexican girl and her first posada (a Christmas festival in Mexico) and her first Christmas piñata. Children have always loved the story and also have used the book to learn more about the culture and life of another country. "Nine Days to Christmas" is highly recommended. Aurora Labastida was the librarian for children's books in Mexico City and she cowrote this story with Marie Ets who was the illustrator. The book won the 1960 Caldecott Medal for best illustration in a children's book.

On the ninth day till Christmas my true love gave to me...

I've never seen a book quite like it. Originally published in 1959, and winner of the 1960 Caldecott medal, "Nine Days to Christmas" is the tale of Ceci and her piñata. Ceci is five years old, and at long last her mother has consented to hold a posada (Christmas party) that Ceci may attend. Ceci is delighted, and when choosing a piñata for the posada she grows horribly attached to one in the shape of a beautiful star. When the time comes to break the piñata into pieces, however, Ceci is understandably distraught. Fortunately, the very nature of piñatas rectifies the situation and Ceci finds comfort in the season.
Both visually and textually this book is an original. Ets's Ceci is definitely five years of age. Her every move and thought confirms her youth and excitement at finally getting to participate in the first of nine Christmas parties. What's nice about the story is the amount of time and attention the author pays to the day-to-day living of a wealthy Mexican family like Ceci's. She displays the world around Ceci without ever ignoring the poor or impoverished. Though Ceci is too young to make any judgments about the way the world is, she knows enough to observe a man too poor to own shoes or village women selling flowers. The book never trivializes the situation of the people, and it grants servants the same respect as their employers. I was especially taken with the section in which the servant girls mix and mingle while waiting for the garbage truck to arrive. It's nice to see someone besides the rich having lives of their own in a picture book. My only objection is the author's dedication at the front. She writes, "To all the little Mexican friends and relatives who helped us make this book". I'm going to assume that by "little" she is referring to the children.
The story is rather original for its publication date. I can't imagine that too many kids books with South American plots were making their way into mainstream America in the late 1950s. Above and beyond the storyline, however, are Aurora Labastida's amazing illustrations. Here is an illustrator that matches Ets's well-paced story and dialogue with a true knowledge of Mexican culture. It's such a relief to see Ceci staring transfixed at a Christmastime market that looks so doggone realistic. And when Ceci and her mother stand on the street, the stores and marquees they pass are all written in Spanish (with the possible exception of the transposed Dairy Queen).
Labastida's style is particularly original as well. Most faces of characters are realistic to the point where I began to wonder if Labastida was drawing from photographs. These characters are drawn with pencil, as are the backgrounds and settings. Yet minute carefully selected portions of each picture are colored in beautifully. Ceci's clothing is always colorful and easy to spot. Using this technique, the artist is able to draw the viewer's eye to the parts of the illustration she wants you to pay the most attention to. The effect is both appropriate and beautifully done. If I've any real criticism of the pictures presented in this book it might be directed towards the piñatas. For some reason, Labasta has drawn incredibly cartoony piñatas, floating in an otherwise realistic setting. The effect is jarring, without necessarily ruining the experience of reading the book. I was also a little taken aback at how rarely we ever see Ceci's face, front and center. In most of this book we get a very nice view of the back of her head. Why this is, I'm uncertain. But again, it's a stylistic choice that fits the book itself without drawing any particular attention to itself.

In the end, I'm happy to report that "Nine Days to Christmas" is fully deserving of its Caldecott medal. This was hardly a forgone conclusion. I've read plenty of award winners that could have stood a little less attention. In this book, however, you have a wonderful introduction for children into customs and celebrations sometimes found in Mexico. Such a story rarely goes out of date. In this case, I don't think it ever will.

About the Author
Samuel Reshevsky was born in Ozorkow, Poland on November 26, 1911. Most chess players reach their peak at age 30. It was Reshevsky's misfortune that he reached his peak during the World War II years, when he was probably the strongest player in the world. He played in the World Championship tournament in 1948 and in the Candidates Tournament in Zurich 1953. In both events, there were rumors and reports of collusion by the Soviets to prevent Reshevsky from winning the world championship, which he probably would have won in a fair contest. Fischer is quoted as saying that Reshevsky was the strongest player in the world and would have easily defeated World Champion Botvinnik in a match. However, Reshevsky never got the chance. There is no doubt at all that Reshevsky was the strongest USA player in his time. He won the US championship seven times, in 1936, 1938, 1940, 1941, 1942, 1946 and 1969. He started his career as the greatest child prodigy in chess history, playing nearly master strength chess when he was eight years old. He went on a tour first of Europe and then America, giving simultaneous chess exhibitions against adults and winning almost every game. As a 9-year old, his first American simultaneous exhibition was with 20 officers and cadets at the Military Academy at West Point. The photo of him playing in this exhibition is one of the most famous in chess history. He won 19 games and drew one. He toured the country and played over 1,500 games as a 9-year old in simultaneous exhibitions and only lost 8 games. He started playing again as an adult and was quickly established as one of the strongest players in the world. Having started as the world's youngest master, Reshevsky went on to become the world's oldest. After winning a game against a strong player in the US Open and when somebody remarked that he was able to win at such an advanced age. He never had a birth certificate due to war-time conditions in his native Poland. Reshevsky remained a world class player even after he had passed 60 years old. He even won a game in Moscow against Smyslov in 1991 when Reshevsky was 80 years old. He defeated Grandmaster and US Chess Champion Larry Christiansen just a few months before he died. He died on April 4, 1992 in New York City at age 81.

Great insights into chess masters

The title is a little misleading: probably more accurate would be "Serious Mistakes in Grandmaster Play" ... or something along these lines. But Reshevsky probably did not want it to sound as if he were appealing to supermarket-tabloid taste. At any rate, some of the games are between grandmasters of about equal strength ... so regardless of who won, it was not an upset ... though perhaps the means were surprising.
The format of the book is that of seventeen chapters in which the worst mistakes in serious play of seventeen grandmasters are examined. These mistakes range from rather subtle ones ... which might simply have been an attempt to surprise, or "out-psyche," the opponent. Others are egregious blunders, and truly surprising. These are more in the nature of windows into the fragile nature of human mind than reflections on the player ... but are nevertheless interesting.
Reshevsky also provides an analysis of each player. Sometimes these are quite opinionated; or perhaps I should say quite strongly worded, though perhaps on the mark. One of the chapters covers the author himself. That chapter and the comments on the other players reveal quite a bit about Reshevsky.

There is no question that Reshevsky was a child prodigy who went on to become a top-notch grandmaster as an adult. The same is true of Capablanca. But one cannot escape a feeling that both players did not quite live up to their potential in the later part of their careers. (Capablanca by losing his crown so soon, as well as his declining performance in tournaments after that. Reshevsky by never becoming the official challenger for the world title, though he got close.) Is this coincidence? I am inclined to think not. I think both men realized that giving chess "their all" would hurt their personalities. I have a half-backed theory that overly concentrating on chess results in a "rewiring" of the brain which tends to distort the personality. I have Bobby Fischer in mind; but also Morphy, von Bardeleben, Nimzovich, and maybe even Alekhine.

Upsets??

After having been reading this book several times, I felt something wrong with the title. Then I read the column Evans On Chess in Chess Life, issue Jan/Feb 2001, I agreed with them. Many games in this books can hardly be the upsets. GM lost to GM; Champion vs Challenger's games can't be graded as such. Usually, a strong player losing to a much weaker player or the player with substantial advantage blowing the game (Reshevsky's own game, page 180) could be put in this catergory. Anyway there are many good games in this book; and the lesson here is even the champions can make mistake too.
Reshevsky, Korchnoy and Larsen are in the book; but Nimzowitch, Euwe, Geller, and Bronstein (one of my mentor) are NOT!!!
Another interesting point GM Larry Evans showed was the game between Euwe-Alekhine on pages 78 and 91 are identical but with some slightly different notes.
