About the Author
Edward Morgan Forster (E. M. Forster) was an English novelist, short-story writer and essayist. Born in 1879, Forster is known for his examination of how class difference and hypocrisy in British society during the beginning of the twentieth century influenced personal connections. These themes are best represented in his novels A Room with a View, A Passage to India, and Howard s End. Forster died of a stroke in 1970 at the age of 91.

Dumming Down Literature

Apparently, Oxford books has decided that the way to make children enjoy reading is to butcher classic works of fiction. I can only imagine that they have made boatloads of money convincing public school systems around the world of the same thing idea, but frankly what they've done with "A Passage to India" and I can only imagine a whole series of great literary novels seems criminal. The answer to educating children is not to make good books shorter and stupider. If length or reading level is a problem, why doesn't a school just find a book they feel is more appropriate? Now, there's probably thousands of vacant-eyed students walking around discussing books that they have only read summaries of. This is exactly the kind of thing Ray Bradbury laments in "Fahrenheit 451", that novels should be turned into mere summary and ruined for future generations. The mere existence of this sad mockery of a book makes me sad for the future.

The book is very interesting. I enjoy reading this book. The story is about something wider than politics, about the search of the human race for a more lasting home, about the universe as embodied in the Indian earth and the Indian sky, about the horror lurking in the Marabar Caves...

I expected the complete Foster novel--disappointed it was "retold" and poorly so. It is a good story, but I was denied the greatness of the author's voice.

Becoming More of a Serial

I've been loving the Kronberg Crimes series since the first volume appeared. A cross-dressing female epidemiologist in Victorian London who matches wits with Sherlock Holmes—what's not to love? These books are smart and the characters are well-developed. That said, this volume doesn't work as well as a stand-alone as the first two volumes did. There's no mystery intrinsic to this volume, just another episode in the multi-book narrative, and if you haven't read one of the earlier volumes, you'll have a hard time following what's happening. I'll keep reading every book that comes out in this series, but I'd prefer volumes that work well in isolation, as well as working as part of an on-going narrative.

Interesting series with a twist on Sherlock Holmes

We have always been tantalized and fascinated with stories of women who crossdress as men in order to achieve their dreams, hide their pasts, or escape dangerous situations. Women who take the place of their men in war, like Melinda Blalock, are heroines. Women who masquerade as men in order to become members of orchestras or bands, like Billy Tipton, gave a clandestine furtiveness to the history of American Jazz. Women who contributed to modern medicine in the guise of men, like Margaret Ann Bulkley, who ended her military career as Inspector General of Military Hospitals, overcame the barriers presented by their sex to excel in their chosen fields. In fiction, the woman who must hide her true self in a world of frockcoats and trousers presents a wealth of dramatic possibilities. Glenn Close gave a tragically beautiful performance in Albert Nobbs, a film about a woman who works as a male waiter in a hotel, hoping to save enough money to open a small tobacco shop, who is given a glimpse of the happiness she could be experiencing in sharing her life with a likeminded female partner.
Annalie Wendeberg has created just such an intriguing character in her Sherlockian series, the Anna Kronberg thrillers. Anna Kronberg has taken on the disguise of a man in order to attend medical school, complete her training, and practice medicine. She remains undiscovered until she is called to perform an examination on the corpse of a cholera victim. Her secret is quickly discarded by the detective evaluating the case, the great Sherlock Holmes. So begins Wendeberg’s continuing series about Dr. Kronberg, as she helps Holmes unravel the mystery of the cholera patient and a threat of biological warfare, becomes a prisioner of Holmes’ archenemy Moriarity, and has to flee for her life from Moriarity’s murderous henchmen.
Kronberg is a wonderful character, prickly, independent, analytical, intelligent, and often unreasonable, but grounded in altruism and a deep love for her father, who always encouraged her and never constrained her ambitions. Holmes is presented as a brilliant but flawed individual, damaged by the psychological torments of his childhood, and with a mildly autistic inability to respond with appropriate human reactions to emotional situations. Much like the Mary Russell books by Laurie King, the Kronberg stories show Holmes drawing emotionally closer to his distaff companion. The male masquerade aspect of the stories is handled deftly, with a great deal of insight into what care someone like Anna must take in maintaining the illusion of masculinity, and the stresses it induces. It would best serve the reader to begin with the first book in the series, as this third volume stands alone only with some difficulty, but it is a welcome addition to the chronology and whets the appetite for the next episode.

Great ending of a fantastic trilogy

The third and final novel of Wendeberg's Moriarty series is a worthy last glimpse of an amazing view of the Sherlock Holmes story and Moriarty's downfall. I especially enjoyed this story, especially after the darkness of THE FALL. That's not to say that THE JOURNEY isn't dark--it's Victorian England and Europe, after all, and Wendeberg doesn't spare us the seamy side of our history--but there's a spot of light at the end that's missing in THE FALL. Thank you, Annelie Wendeberg, for another enjoyable take on the Sherlock Holmes story; I appreciate the research, the time, the writing skills, and your vision of making this trilogy as wonderful as it is.

Finding Purpose in Life by Listening to your Heart

The Power of the Heart is the companion book to the film by the same name. Each chapter of the book focuses on a different power of the heart, such as gratitude, forgiveness, resilience, and love. Baptist de Pape then provides quotes from the 18 spiritual leaders he interviewed, along with his thoughts on each power. Quotes from other famous people are also peppered throughout. At the end of each chapter, he provides a “Contemplation” exercise relevant to the topic of the chapter. The format of the book reminded me of The Secret by Rhonda Byrne.

I liked seeing the differing perspectives of the spiritual leaders to the topics Baptist raised. I found myself particularly drawn to the quotes from Deepak Chopra and Paulo Coelho. Here’s an example from each:

Deepak: “Love without action is meaningless, and action without love is irrelevant.”

Paulo: “There is nothing wrong with fear. The only thing that is wrong is to be paralyzed by fear.”

Baptist also made some great observations, like saying: “Resentment is like a cup of poison you pour down your throat in the hope it will kill the other person. And while the other remains unharmed, you wind up destroying yourself.”

There were also some great quotes from historical figures to illustrate certain points, such as Gandhi’s comment: “As human beings, our greatness lies not so much in being able to remake the world…as in being able to remake ourselves.”

This is not the kind of book where you get an in-depth look at the philosophy of each spiritual leader, but it does provide inspiring reminders from all of them to lead with our hearts if we really want to live a purposeful life. The quotes alone make it an excellent read.

Beginning with the attention to detail on the cover, the dust jacket, the paper and the layout, this is a book you will keep forever. The book is a companion to the movie, featuring the vision of the author/creator Baptist De Pape and what he calls his “co-creators,” eighteen icons of the spiritual and scientific world. He interviewed them over a period of time, including Deepak Chopra, Paulo Coelho, Eckart Tolle, Jane Goodall and many more. The results are breathtaking. As a Licensed HeartMath® Trainer, I am fully aware of the heart as the center of our power and wisdom as represented here by Howard Martin and Rollin McCraty. As a lifetime reader, I am aware of the heart-path of Isabel Allende and Maya Angelou. Many thanks and much appreciation to Atria Books for the ARC of this wonderful book for the purpose of this review. This book is co- authored, compiled, and edited by Baptist De Pape, a lawyer, author, filmmaker, and spiritual advisor.

This treasured volume was written to educate, motivate, inspire, and enlighten readers of the most powerful dimension of consciousness, energy, wisdom, of life itself: the human heart. This short volume is divided into three parts. Part I: Paths To The Heart, Part II: The Inner Powers, Part III: Heart In The World. The eighteen contributing authors - medical professional scholars, scientists, doctors, and educators are among the best highly acclaimed world wide thinkers and spiritual advisors in modern society. The observations and comments of each individual were short, direct, and easy to follow. Contemplative exercises for meditation and enlightenment were also included.

The observations realized from "Power of the Heart: Finding Your True Purpose in Life" were that the heart is all knowing, so powerful it is associated with the "voice of God" or the universe, which essence is love. We connect with our heart through silence. People who are disconnected from their hearts were described as "the walking dead" merely existing. This is at the center of much emotional distress and difficulty. The heart and brain connect through "the spirit of nature" which is all around in the outdoors. Animals are another example of connection, lowering stress and blood pressure.
The Institute of HeartMath is briefly discussed: we have 60,000 thoughts a day 80% are negative, when we live from our heart (love), lives are changed in the level of consciousness. Whoever owns the rights to this book is doing themselves a disservice. Mr. Raiport's overview of the Russian Olympic team's psychological training tools is indispensable to athletes and athletics.

This is one of my favorite books! If my house were burning down I'd grab Supertraining and this book. The read is easy and flowing if youre into the subject, I read it all in one night because I could not put it down. NO COMPLAINTS! Solid information

Solid info about the mind game as developed by the Soviets. Lots of good exercises. As usual, it's important to take a fresh look at old concepts, and this book does that. Self development has been around since before the Greek philosophers, but understanding and applying it is made easier by seeing the basic ideas from every angle and using various exercises; this book offers both.
