This book is interesting and rewarding due to it's applicability for actually setting Tor up. I encountered a small problem with the process of installing Tor that the Author John Smith didn't describe for a beginner in the book, but it only required common sense to get things right.The following chapters will discuss how you will use Tor for more than just hiding who you are online.Tor can be for hacking into programs without anyone seeing you.Tor is a program that is made up of a network of servers that are operated by teams of volunteers so that people are able to improve the security as well as the privacy that they have when it comes to them browsing online.You'll be able to set things up, understand how TOR works and why the government won't be able to detect you. If you are at all worried about your privacy online then I would recommend this book to you. It has step by step instructions that were very easy for me to understand. This was a great book. I'm a total noobie to TOR and deep web matters and this book took all the random bits of information that would have taken me forever to find and put it all together into one easy to read book. I must be missing something?

Judging by the reviews, I was thinking this is best book that ever happened to the world. So many ladies I know are addicted to this series. My mom loves the series and has encouraged me to read it for ages so I finally bout the book for my Kindle.

There were parts of this book that were really engaging and interesting. However, I feel like I was always waiting for something that never happened. I kept reading thinking that something big and momentous was going to happen but I was always disappointed. I think that this book could have been much shorter first off. An event happens in the book and the next chapter is basically the characters reiterating what happened to other characters in the book. I don't need to read about one event 4 times in a row.

Claire's time travel seemed almost incidental to the plot line. This book could very well just take place in Scotland in the same year with a lost English lady of the same time. Nothing exciting happens with the time travel aspect of the story. Her husband in the beginning (Frank) is a dud of a character and I didn't miss him at all. Unfortunately I didn't love Jamie either so if I was Claire, I don't know which crappy reality I would choose.

There are some really bizarre sex scenes in this book. Some are hazily vague and you are left wondering what they are actually doing, others are kind of skeevy or just plain lame, and others are abusive. At no point did I find any of these scenes romantic or exciting and could have done without them. Something about the way Gabaldon describes these scenes just left me with a gross feeling. I can't explain it and I am not a prude at all. I read fairly explicit romances all the time and never had a problem with sex scenes in general. Also, the sheer number of them in this book was irritating. Enough is enough already!

I had a lot of questions about characters that were never fully developed and questions about the intentions of said characters that were never answered. Now, I will admit that my eyes were glazing over in several spots and I started skipping some pages so maybe I missed something. This was a strange read for me because I was engaged by the characters overall and compelled to read forward, but most of the time I was bored out of my mind hoping for more historical information or more insight into the characters themselves. I am actually boggled by the length of this book! The rambling reiteration of every event was almost shocking.

I finished this book (finally) and I feel so relieved that it is over! I will not be reading the next installments. So ladies, I will kindly agree to disagree with you about the greatness of this book. I get the feeling from looking at Amazon reviews and reviews on Goodreads that readers either really love or really hate this series of books. I was hoping to love it, but I am disappointed. I thought this was a book about time travel with some supernatural/sci fi plot woven together with history. What I found was just a historical romance without many interesting historical facts woven in. Don't get me wrong, I love historical romances, but there are far better out there!

I've read all the books in this Outlander series,.It's a good read and interesting to follow the lives of Jamie and Claire, however it's getting a little boring. Most were filled with action, but 5 and 6 have been a little disappointing. The writing style however reads like flowing water. I just think she's having trouble filling the story line.

Pure Entertainment - Rich and deeply layered

Great story, full of rich characters and vivid scenes of an eighteenth century Scotland. Jamie and Clair are a great match - both learning and growing together, bridging the customs of disparate times with grace and humor. The narrator is excellent, her rich English accent fills every voice with depth and purpose. The audiobook is better than any TV series, and you have total control of when you listen, for how long - no commercials. I drive long distances - to Tucson and back - listening in one ear, the hours pass by in the glow of dramatic entertainment.

A humourous look at the Roman Army from the bottom up.

I've always been interested in ancient Rome ever since I was young, and watched the splendid BBC series I, Claudius. That love affair has been carried on through the decades with plenty of books, films on both the big screen and television, and whatever I could find about the topic. So it was only natural that this rather humourous look at the life of the typical Roman legionary would wander into my eager hands.

Philip Matyszak, a long-time author on topics based around Rome and her armies, now has come out with a little book that takes a close look at the day-to-day life of the common soldier. Titled Legionary: The Roman Soldier's (Unofficial) Manual, this is a lode of information, crammed full of drawings, maps, photographs of ancient finds and art, and a wry sense of humour.

Basing the narrative around the year 100 CE, Matyszak begins with what is the Roman army, and who and where the typical recruit came from. What I found very interesting was that there were very specific requirements for those entering military service -- they had to be citizens, of a certain height, in possession of all their body parts in good working order and come with a letter of recommendation. Slaves, eunuchs, and women were barred from military service, for obvious reasons. And once he took an oath of service, the recruit was part of a vast organization that stretched over most of modern Europe, the British Isles and Northern Africa and the Mideast.

Successive chapters look at the various ranks within the army -- while officers had the privilege of command, it was the centurions that the legionary feared, much as a modern soldier tends to be wary of sergeants. And namely, how those recruits trained -- with a lot of marching and digging -- under the watchful eyes of a centurion or two. There are brief descriptions of the various legions and lore about where they were stationed, along with other branches of the Roman army such as the cavalry, auxiliaries -- mostly local troops, and open to noncitizens -- and the navy.

Next up is looking at the kit and gear that a legionary would be living with, along with the training in how to use those weapons. For the legionary life could be pretty boring in the barracks, and so the clever centurions came up with the ideas of endless marching, drilling and cleaning to occupy a bored soldier's time. Of course, every now and then there would be excursions into the countryside to put down the odd rebellion or two, or to let the local population know that there was a well-trained military nearby to quell any thoughts of leaving the loving protection of Rome.

Then there are the campaigns and battles that a typical legionary might face. One chapter alone is dedicated to the art of siege, with Julius Caesar's siege of Alesia being one shining example. And if a legion was fortunate enough, there could even be a triumph in Rome itself, the pinnacle of both a general and legions success.

What made this book really work for me was the sheer detail that is crammed in here. The writing style is crisp, with a generous slathering of humour and a very sardonic look at Roman officers -- the section on the various barbarians ready to pounce outside of Rome's borders is a treat to read about. Besides all of the black and white illustrations in the text, there are also two colour inserts of photographs and drawings. The first one has drawings in colour of showing legionaries at various activities and the like, while the second one is of a modern re-enactment group that is based around a Roman Legion. This one was a real help, as seeing actual people in actual armor and gear and battle formations does help to give a sense of what the real thing might have been like. The book has at the end, a map of the Roman Empire, suggestions for further reading (all contemporary chronicles about the army from Roman authors), sources for the illustrations, and an index.

Summing up, if your interest is ancient Roman, this is a great little guide about life in the army. If you've enjoyed the HBO miniseries about Rome, or if you have read Colleen McCullough's excellent series about the end of the Roman Republic, then you're going to want this book for your collection. It helped me fill in a few gaps, gave me quite a few laughs, and has spurred me on to read more about Rome's armies.

All in all, a great read and worth seeking out. Four stars overall. Recommended.

This informative, entertaining, and often laugh-out-loud book is the Roman legionary of 100 AD's equivalent of the Boy Scout Fieldbook - but with a lot more gore and rough edges and a lot less couth. The author, tongue planted firmly in cheek (Tacitus meets Lindsey Davis), tells the prospective recruit everything he needs to know about Roman military life - qualifications for enlistment, various military careers, equipment, training and military organization. Just so the recruit doesn't get bored with endless training, polishing armor, digging ditches, latrine duty, road-building, construction projects, and discipline, he has something to look forward to - battles! He will learn about all the people who will want to kill him in various unpleasant ways, camp and campaign life, and besieging cities. If he is very lucky and lives long enough, he may take part in a great victory and get to go back to Rome and participate in a triumph and receive honors and a share of the loot. If he lives through the term of his enlistment he can retire on a pension and maybe even a grant of some land to farm.

The author begins each chapter with a short bit of military wisdom such as: "We were against the cream of the Gallic army. The odds were a thousand to one. But he was a very tough Gaul." He goes on to give useful advice. A good fit for your helmet is vital because "Convex internal protrusions become concave indentations in the skull." "To the average legionary, all centurions are dolori posteriori...." "No combat-ready soldiers will pass an inspection. No inspection-ready soldiers will pass combat."

Do not underestimate this book as lightweight or superficial. It is incredibly well researched and organized, clearly written, and includes many short excerpts from original source writings on Roman warfare by Tacitus, Julius Caesar, Josephus, Frontinus and many others. It is lavishly illustrated with drawings and photographs, many of which are color plates of authentically dressed and equipped re-enactors doing all of the typical legionary activities. Convenient aids included for the reader are an excellent glossary, a bibliography, index and a map of the Roman Empire showing where the legions were stationed in 100 AD. Finally, you will amaze your friends with your skill at Roman numerals if you study the page numbers.

This book may be one of the few places the reader who doesn't know much about military history can get a clear and simple explanation of the history, structure and organization of the Roman legions - a great help for anyone studying the history of the period or who enjoys reading historical novels. I wish I had had it when I took Greek and Roman history in college. In addition, adult scouters may find the Roman methods of managing hordes of barbarian warriors useful in running Camporees or Summer Camps.

One of the best books on the Roman military

This book is a great introduction to the Roman Army. It's written with great verve and humor. When you begin to read the book, it's impossible to put down. You get an excellent idea of what life would be like in the Roman army.
The writer shows you the entry requirments for the army. You can't help thinking to yourself whether you'd be allowed to join. He describes what life on campaign would be like, and how Roman military camps would be set up. You also get a brief description in the best way to fight Rome's enemies.
The author also gives a basic introduction to Roman military tactics. This done in an accessable way. By the time you have finished this book, you come away with a greater knowledge of not just military history but Roman history in general.
This book is also great value for money. Ultimately, this is a must read book if you want to know more about the Roman army.

Mark S. Dorfman. I have taught introductory risk management and insurance classes for over 30 years at the following universities: University of Illinois, Miami University (Ohio), the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, and the Wirtschaftsuniversitat Wien (The Business and Economics University of Vienna, Austria). I still enjoy teaching; in fact, most days, I love it. I hope readers that have come this far in the preface already realize that I believe teaching risk management and insurance to students is very important. I continue to find my students stimulating, challenging, and friendly people. I always kept students in mind when writing this book, and I hope they find the writing style "user friendly."

I was born in Chicago and attended Chicago public schools. My undergraduate degree is from Northwestern University. The University of Illinois awarded my Master of Science and Doctor of Philosophy degrees.

I have held high offices, and served on boards of directors of several academic and nonacademic institutions and I have written extensively in the major risk management and insurance academic journals. I look forward to spending part of every summer in Door County, Wisconsin.

Extremely well written, many current examples and court cases, raises important social aspects of the insurance transaction. Covers issues important to consumers expecially frequently purchased insurance contracts

This book is user-friendly, and students really like it. The only thing they don't like is the price, but, every intro text like this is over $100 these days. I really love this text for teaching my introductory classes.

Should be required reading for Undergrad Business

Definitely worth reading, even if not required for a class. A very accessible introduction to the field of Risk Management along with useful, practical information about the kinds of insurance contracts that will be encountered by consumers and businesses alike.

This, and introductory business law should be taught to all undergraduate b-school students. A great book, much better and more useful than a certain black-and-yellow book about insurance that you might be tempted to order.

Good for beginner who wants general rails knowledge.

I was disappointed it did not address ActionCable or API mode which are new to Rails 5. The only reference to action cable I could find was in the end of the book on one of the last pages as a definition. It really just seemed to be a rework of an older version perhaps to be compatible with Rails 5, but not much effort seemed to be made to make the code relevant to rails 5 and understanding it's new features, which is SPECIFICALLY why I bought the book. Honestly I would not recommend this book if your interest is in rails 5 specifically. It would be good for a beginner who knows very little ands just wants to learn rails in general, but I personally felt that it was a huge let down for someone who wanted a more comprehensive introduction to rails 5 and it's features.

Great, But Watch Out

I am almost done with the book and I found it much easier to grok than the Agile Rails book. Its likely because the latter book deal with the shopping cart example (and e-commerce was the last thing I wanted to deal with at the time I bought the book), so going through this book was a pleasure. So far, I got some apps up and running thanks to it and I am pretty comfortable going into more advanced at this point.

That said, the code in the book do needs to be proof-read more throughly - a number of times I got stuck in one section, trying to figure out what I was doing wrong, only to find by looking at the errata online (or the source code download) that the snippets are wrong. Take my advice - if something broke or didn't work the first time, look at the errata and then source code to make sure the code in the book is correct or not (hopefully, they will correct it in later printings).

With that out the way, I recommend this book to anybody interested in Rails. It'll get you going in short order.

Great Intro Rails Book

I have been using Rails for going on two years now, but have a penchant for accumulating books on subjects that interest me. I tore into this book the day that it was delivered, and was not disappointed. Very well written, and informative. I picked up a few kernals here and there from the book ( remember, I'm not a total newbie ), which made it worth the money.

If you are not familiar with web development in general, this book alone will not help you. You'll need a basic grasp of the fundamentals: (X)HTML, the general way web development client-side and server-side work, basic data base knowledge. Nothing earth shattering, but none of these things are covered. Though there is a small crash course on the Ruby language, you'd do well to get a beginning book on it as well, for better understanding, though the author does describe what his code does.

The book does what it's charter describes well. It can bring you up to speed with the basics of Rails. I liked it, and recommend it.

....this book is a start. I don't think it gives you all of the tools that you will need. As you will learn through reading the book, there are several instances of mere chance where a person was given the opportunity to disappear and took advantage of it. However, some of the tools they give you will help a lot. An interesting read but there are books that will help you out more. Use this as a guide to find more resources.

Magic Lessons

There are so many times when you don't have very much time to sit down for a long read or long drawn out boring lessons. This book gets right to the point. I very much like this book. It is a wonderful and easy read.

Pretty good

There is a lot of garbage out there and it is so hard to sift through the good and the bad. It is almost impossible to find anything that does not label itself "wicca". Which is something Traditionalists will argue to death is not a solitary religion. (to be Wiccan you MUST be in a coven.) This book gives some good instructions on how to expand your abilities without labeling it Wicca" He also has some good advice on finding a teacher. I reccomend this book for some good basics. Definitely a good starting point.

very good introductory (and review) course

There are many books on widely varying paths. This book is an excellent source book for someone contemplating how or where to start. There are no "hidden agendas" here. The caveats are clear and sound. The integration of introspection into morality and internal work, as well as the importance of the mental work such as reading other sources and keeping a journal, are well done. This book is also a good refresher of the basics for those who feel they are 'advanced'.
