A powerful narration of emotions of a young woman's struggle, an excellent thrilling read

"Yefon The Red Necklace" is a breath of fresh air to a book lover like me. It is a tale of an inspiring young female survivor, who wants nothing more out of life other than to make a difference in the lives of the women in her family and her community.
Subsequently, in her quest for more and not settling for the norms of her culture, she encountered all sorts of challenges and obstacles but she never gave up when the journey got tough.
The story of Yefon is refreshingly rich in African cultural contents, well detailed you feel like you are right there with the Nso people; yet, so captivating and emotional.
This book leaves you salivating for more... But most importantly, it gives you the feeling of a Survivor, Hero, Hope and Freedom. I really enjoyed reading this book and can't wait for the next phase of the trilogy.

a strong narrative is lost in a childish voice

This book was a complete flop for me. If you keep up with me on Goodreads, you have probably already seen the star rating I assigned this book, and that is highly unusual and out of character for me.

Yefon is the second daughter of the first wife in her compound in Cameroon. The novel starts off in such a way as to turn off a reader, almost bashing the conveniences and technology of modern times, compared with those of the time Yefon grew up.

"One didn’t curb boredom by lying on a comfortable couch and turning on a 42-inch flat screen TV to watch Keri Washington fix things on Scandal. It’s not like you could log onto Yahoo news to see Miley Cyrus twerking at the VMAs either! These are the sorts of things that my grandchildren are now obsessed with. In my time, you sat by a massive hearth, alongside twenty other skinny black rustics, to hear your grandmother tell stories."

I understand older generations wanting to impart “their days” to their offspring – or anyone who will listen – but this Yefon did not endear herself to me. However, Yefon did paint a pretty clear (and ugly) picture of women’s stature during this time. It is very bleak.

"Regardless of whether your husband slept with your sister or used you as a punching bag, it was your job to hold your family together or else you had failed as a woman.

The man had all the financial power, and you were nothing but a childbearing cook with genius farming skills."

In fact, the entire first half of the book was a mess of characters, terms, tangents, and unclear plot lines. I was so very tempted to DNF this book, but I kept pushing myself. If you had asked me what the book was about at the 20% mark, I would have told you it seemed like random babbling about all manner of things, which only served to confuse me.

In Yefon’s culture, polygamy is common, and Yefon hates her father’s second wife’s daughter, Sola, who is beautiful and gets out of doing anything. In fact, she gets beauty treatments all the time! In such a time, with so little, and needing workers, I find that hard to believe was possible for 20 years.

Yefon also does not get along at all with her mother. She is incessantly getting in trouble, and crying and screaming until her father, home from working away, would come and have it out with her mother. This carried on even until she was 16, 17, and she would jump upon her father as if she was a small child when he would come home or rescue her.

"I hated that my mother insulted me with a title so malevolent. Ogbanje children are evil children that die when they are born and come back again many times, plaguing their mothers with trouble in their lifetime."

Yefon forges a relationship with her half-sister Kadoh, who is the daughter of a slave. All that’s said about the slavery is that Kadoh couldn’t do some of the things Yefon got to do, or be in her compound all the time, and that their language was different…and yet it seemed Kadoh was there all the time. Kadoh was an interesting character, very different than other people, eccentric, but very supportive of Yefon. But Kadoh would always hold out on Yefon, even in times of stress, so I didn’t see how this relationship could sustain under such one-sideness. It was obvious that Yefon looked up to Kadoh, but even into their late teens and early twenties, neither marry, which I gathered was unusual.

There were moments in the book when Yefon’s character had strong moments, but they were few and fleeting.

Now, the red necklace! It is a gift from Yefon’s father, and Yefon wears it all the time. It provides her guidance on occasion, being an item belonging to what seemed even to Yefon to be a mythical goddess-type character. Although this magical, mystical item has fallen into Yefon’s hands, in the end I don’t think it served her too well. This seemed anticlimactic after the title, and all that the necklace means to Yefon, and all that her father has trumped Yefon up to be – that she will change the future. How very flat that falls.

In the latter part of the book there seems to be a clearer plot line, but the ending falls completely flat, and the necklace that has guided Yefon for years fails her. The book ends on a major cliffhanger, which only serves to continue the storyline in the following books.

Another reason I had issue with some things in this book is that Yefon uses terminology in retrospect (such as describing substances as jello-like and referencing the internet), when no one in her compound at that time knew what any of those things are. It gave an unauthentic voice to Yefon that carried throughout the novel. It reminded me of Scout’s voice in To Kill A Mockingbird, but the effect was completely lost in the dramatic Yefon.

Unless you are overly interested in this book based on the premise or the setting of Cameroon, I would recommend a pass on this book. It is not a story for every woman.

Great and Inspiring Book!!!!!

Yefon is a riveting and compelling read that captivates the reader within the first chapter. Its a powerful, emotional tale of a woman who is expected to live up to the low standards of women in her village. Her ambition is to learn to read despite that desire putting her life in danger. The courage that builds on this woman is impeccable and the story was descriptively written and suspenseful, its definitely a story for every woman to read.

Hurray for Approach Guides!

OK -- these Approach Guides are just great! What a novel idea: a relatively short, well-written, easy-to-read travel companion which is useful whether you're actually going to a place, have come back from there, or are the proverbial arm-chair traveler. Each guide is right-on-point and sufficiently detailed, addressing a unique aspect of the art and architecture of a country or region, with plenty of photogrpahs, highlighted diagrams, maps and clear language. And all for a really reasonable price. I've purchased several Approach Guides -- for my Kindle, as pdf's, and to use on my iPad. I took three of the India Approach Guides with me on a recent trip there and they made for a perfect source of quick reference information while visting caves, temples and monuments. I've purchased a few other guides for places I'm considering visiting (Indonesia). And I've purchased a few for places I traveled to a long time ago in order to refresh my memory (Myanmar). I even got a thank you note from one of the authors after my first purchase! Good work, Approach Guides. You've come up with a brilliant and unique product.

Essential guide for these UNESCO World Heritage sites!

In 1983, the Ajanta and Ellora caves were the first sites in India selected as UNESCO World Heritage sites along with the Taj Mahal and Agra Fort. Ajanta has 26 Buddhist caves built in 2 waves: 2nd Century BC and 4th Century AD. Ellora has 34 caves built later that are Buddhist, Hindu, and Jain. This guide selects the best 9 from Ajanta and the best 8 from Ellora for wonderfully clear, succinct commentary with highlighted diagrams, closeup photographs, and author's tips to get the most from your visit. I visited in March 2015, spending 4 hours at Ajanta and 5.5 hours at Ellora. This guide was truly invaluable to helping me locate and appreciate the highlights of these beautiful and inspiring spiritual places. I have used the Approach Guides for Bagan; Angkor Wat; Morocco; Khajuraho; and Delhi, Agra, and the Taj Mahal, which I have reviewed on their Amazon product pages with great praise. Bravo!

We really like this Approach Guide, we visited Ajanta, Ellora early this year. The guide is not too long not too short. It has just enough information for us to explore the sites by ourselves. It's just right for what we need, looking forward to use Approach Guide again for other destinations

About the Author
Giovanni Civardi was born in Milan in 1947. While training to become a sculptor, portrait artist and illustrator at the Free Life-Study School of the Accademia di Brera, he also studied medicine and surgery. For over a decade, he worked as an illustrator, producing commissions for newspapers, magazines and book covers. During frequent trips to France and Denmark, Civardi put on one-man exhibitions of this work and pursued his interest in studying the relationship between medical anatomy and the human form as depicted by the artist. His experience gained from teaching anatomy, life drawing and portraiture in schools and institutions over many years has led to the publication of numerous books in which Civardi's experiences are brought into focus.

Great resource for learning OpenStreetMap

If you've been interested in contributing to OpenStreetMap but aren't sure how or where to start, Jonathan Bennett has written a reference book about the collaborative geographic data creating service. Jonathan Bennett has been extensively involved with OpenStreetMap since 2006 and is a member of the OpenStreetMap Foundation. The book also receives the benefit of having been reviewed by Steve Coast, the founder of OpenStreetMap and Richard Fairhurst, an early adopter.

OpenStreetMap: Be Your Own Cartographer presents a comprehensive and straightforward look at the crowdsourcing project. All aspects of being involved with OpenStreetMap as a contributor (or as a mapper as volunteers are known) are addressed int this book. Bennett starts at the beginning with an introductory chapter that covers what OpenStreetMap is, why you should use it, and why you should contribute to the effort. Further chapters explore gathering data via GPS, and covering all aspects of working with OpenStreetMap including collecting data, editing data, and creating customized maps.

OpenStreetMap - Be Your Own Cartographer by Jonathan Bennett
Since OpenStreetMap data is freely available, an important section of the book addresses how to extract geographic data along with a chapter specifically on Osmosis, a Java application known as the "Swiss Army Knife" of OpenStreetMap.

Guided tour of OpenStreetMap and all it has to offer

The book is a fairly light-read and targeted at those individuals with little to no knowledge about mapping, GIS, or data collecting, but who want to contribute to making
a freely available map of the world. It is also targeted at hobbyist surveyors or wannabee hobbyist and community surveyors. Finally it's also targeted at programmers who want to customize
OpenStreetMap for their use-cases.

How is the book Organized?

Chapter 1 and Chapter 2: Are intros to OpenStreetMap, what is it, how to register to start editing. Places where the community hangs out e.g. Chatting on IRC, Mailing Lists, Forums. Where to find planet osm bulk files (which are huge), If you are familiar with OpenStreetMap, you can get away with just skimming these chapters, but there are tidbits here and there that I was unaware of.

Chapter 3 - Chapter 7 Are chapters meant for people who want to contribute data via thier own GPS journeys or who want to edit / QA features on the map.

Chapter 3 - Gathering data using GPS introduces you to what GPS is, NAVSTAR, and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS), GPS traces. Equipment you need to get started doing GPS traces. It doesn't make any specific suggestions about brands of GPS to use, but does cover classes found such as smart phone built-in, car mounted, USB, etc. and configuring them so they can be easily imported into OpenStreetMap. It also covers Photo Mapping and Audio mapping.
Chapter 4: How OpenSteetMap Records Geographical Features - This one while geared towards map editors, is a good one to read if you want to load the data into your own database and query it. It covers the various OSM primitives such as Nodes, Ways, Relations, Changesets, and tags and how they work together. It covers dos and don't about data tagging.
Chapter 5: OpenStreetMap's Editing Aplications - There are several tools available for editing OSM data. This chapter covers the most supported ones and a brief summary of the pros/cons of each.
Chapter 6: Mapping and Editing Techniques - This covers how to use the editing tools to draw nodes, lines, add tags and so forth. The techniques covered are applicable to all the various editing tools.
Chapter 7: Checking OpenStreetMap Data for Problems - covers how to use the various OpenStreetMap QA tools and how to find unsurveyed areas

Chapter 8-10 Are chapters geared for the programmer looking to customize OpenStreetMap look/feel and offerings for their own needs. This is the part I was most interested in and am still going thru. It's the most advanced of the book and to take real advantage of it, it helps to follow the instructions step by step rather than just reading it.

Chapter 8: Producing Customized Maps Covers simple exports using the API, Kosmos, and Osmarender tools. How to create your own customized tiles with Kosmos (which is sadly no longer being developed according to the book), SVG Maps with Osmarender. One thing I found sorely missing in this chapter was at least some coverage of using Mapnik to generate tiles or Osmarender/Tiles@Home to render tiles which are described in Creating your own tiles.
Chapter 9: Getting Raw OpenStreetMap data This was my favorite chapter, probably because I love raw data. It's like getting raw marble and being able to carve it to your own liking. This chapter covered the various ways you can get raw OpenStreetMap data -- Planet files, the main OpenStreetMap API, and Extended API. It also talk about cloudmades downloadable extracts available in various formats including the very popular ESRI Shapefile format and also partitioned into various geographic sets for easier download.
Chapter 10: Manipulating OpenStreetMap data using Osmosis covers how to use the commandline osmosis tool for cutting regiions and features of interest out of a planet osm file and also using its splitting and merging features.

Chapter 11: OpenStreetMap's Future Briefly covers what is coming in OpenStreetMap such as the new data license, and MapCSS initiatives.

Overall I thought this was a good intro book to OpenStreetMap that gave you a good ground to build on. It gave you enough informaton about terminology used, basic workflow and links to get more advanced information about the tools commonly used and how to use them.

Easy to read tech manual

I recently worked my way through OpenStreetMap: Be your own Cartographer by Jonathan Bennett. I've been playing with OpenStreetMap, or OSM as most call it, for over a year. OSM is basically a crowd sourced map of the world in case you've been living under a rock. I've edited street names, digitized some areas that were missing from the map, added a few GPS tracks, but never really tried anything advanced like mass uploading or custom renderings. I was hoping to delve deeper into the possibilities of OSM by working through this book.

At first, I must admit, I was feeling like the book was a bit too simple even for me. Mr. Bennett chose to start at the very beginning with OpenStreetMap and through my trial and error method of learning I had already picked up much of this knowledge. These first chapters are meant for someone who hasn't used OSM before, and beginners will certainly appreciate the simplicity.

Right around the fourth chapter is when OpenStreetMap began to get interesting to me. OSM uses Tagging to identify features and the map renderings are based on these tags. If you tag items incorrectly they may not show up on the public map. This book did a really nice overview of the organized chaos(the ability of any citizen cartographer to tag items in any way they like) without getting into the level of detail already available on the OSM wiki pages. I feel more confident having read this chapter and now have a better understanding of where to look if I run into trouble.

Other highlights include the chapters on editing applications, inspecting data for problems and especially the custom renderings chapter. Within chapter 8 Mr. Bennett walked me through the process of creating rendering rules for OSM with very clear and concise instruction. Within 30 minutes, I had created a basic custom rendering and now have the tools to create my own maps based on OSM raw data.

Overall this book does a nice job of serving as an instruction manual for OSM. Since OSM is still relatively young, the first couple of chapters get you started with the basics which I would have appreciated more if I hadn't used OSM before. The reader is soon collecting and editing their own data. More advanced users will benefit from explanations of OSM's extended API, custom rendering, raw data collection and the introduction of several OSM editors; especially the chapter on Osmosis (the "Swiss Army Knife of OpenStreetMap"). Unlike most tech manuals this can be read without a computer in front of you due to descriptive language and well placed screen captures. It's written in a way that surveys the concepts more than it presents code. It does, however, give links and instruction for downloading and installing software when necessary.

I highly recommend picking up a copy for yourself if you would like to become a part of the OSM community, or if you're already an OSM editor hoping to refine your skills.
