Against this inflammable backdrop Lieutenant-Colonel Matthew Hervey, recently returned from an assignment in the Balkans, takes command of his regiment, the 6th Light Dragoons. His fears that things might be a little dull are quickly dispelled by the everyday business of vexatious officers, difficult choices over which NCOs to promote not to mention the incendiarists on the doorstep of the King himself. But it’s when the Sixth are sent to Brussels for the fifteenth anniversary celebrations of the battle of Waterloo and find themselves caught up in the Belgian uprising against Dutch rule that the excitement really starts. Will Hervey be able to keep out of the fighting – a war that would lead, nearly a century later, to Britain’s involvement in an altogether different war – while safeguarding his country’s interests? Not likely!

About the Author
Allan Mallinson is a former army officer of 35 years' service. As well as the Matthew Hervey series, which includes Honorable Company and The Sabre's Edge, he is the author of Light Dragoons, a history of four British Cavalry regiments, one of which he commanded. He writes for the Times and Spectator.

I must be mellowing in my dotage, since some volumes ago the lack of action caused me no little angst, whereas now I find myself almost appreciating the picture drawn of England in 1830 as Hervey navigates the issues of command of a regiment and neglect of his family. On the up side too, we see something of Captain Peto, who promptly steals every scene he is in: and perhaps a little happiness is coming his way at last. If nothing else, I could forgive a lot due to that alone, since Peto is perhaps - along with Fairbrother - the best man appearing in the Hervey series. As I've said before, I'd prefer to have read another nautical series with Peto the hero, but Mr Mallinson writes of what he knows, a cavalry regiment, and there is some little value in that also.

Early Hervey volumes were described as "a cavalry Sharpe" - and that may have been true then, but certainly is not now. This is a much loving fictional history of the rural troubles of the winter of 1830, and then of commemorations of Waterloo with yet more civil disturbance (but by foreigners who really don’t know better, rather than by Englishmen). In the end, I enjoy the history enough to let the paucity of battles pass by, but I do have to say that any blurb on the back of the book promising action should be taken with a very large pinch of salt.

I don’t know where Hervey goes after this, and to a degree I don’t mind. This is more Austen than Cornwell, but if you can manage that, well recommended.

Allan Mallinson has replaced Patrick O'Brien as my favorite author of historical fiction. His Matthew Hervey series is outstanding- beautifully and intelligently written, nearly flawlessly researched, and vividly descriptive. Interestingly, although there is relatively little "action" in this, his latest installment, I think it may actually be my favorite of the series. Mallinson is not afraid to take us into his character's inner life, and Hervey's is extremely well-drawn. His is a deeper, richer character than most heroes of historical fiction. He sins, and feels remorse that is believable for the son of a cleric. The secondary characters are very well done, also. This is a mature, intelligently written novel, and at the same time, it has enough excitement even for the literary adrenalin fan.

Worthwhile, but not the best in the series

Compared to the other books, I thought this one was a little weaker, although still enjoyable. No epic battles, a bit of politics, just seemed a little slow although well written as always.

About the Author
Daniel Bar-Tal is the Branco Weiss Professor of Research in Child Development and Education at Tel-Aviv University. His primary research interests are political and social psychology, particularly the socio-psychological foundations of intractable conflicts and peace building. Professor Bar-Tal is the recipient of a number of major awards, including the Otto Klineberg Intercultural and International Relations Prize of SPSSI, the Golestan Fellowship at the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study in the Humanities and Social Sciences, the Peace Scholar Award of the Peace and Justice Studies Association and the 2011 Lasswell Award and 2012 Nevitt Sanford Award of the International Society of Political Psychology. He has published widely in the areas of conflict and peace studies. His 2005 book Stereotypes and Prejudice in Conflict, co-authored with Yona Teichman, received the Alexander George Award from the International Society of Political Psychology.

About the Author
Gregory Pence is one of the pioneering bioethicists of America. Having taught for thirty years in a medical school, he has seen many past prophecies of doom fail. He is optimistic about biotechnology.

He is internationally famous for defending cloning and genetically modified food against bioLuddites who oppose research on stem cells and cloning. Because of his views, his talks have been picketed by Greenpeace and anti-cloning zealots.

His Classic Cases in Medical Ethics: Accounts of the Cases that Shaped Medical Ethics, 4th ed., 2003, is one of the standard textbooks of bioethics. His Who's Afraid of Human Cloning? (1998) is already regarded as a classic in bioethics for its rigorous attack on opponents of cloning. His Cloning After Dolly: Who's STILL Afraid of Human Cloning? will appear in late 2004. His Designer Food: Mutant Harvest or Breadbasket of the World? won a Choice Outstanding Academic Title in 2003.

He doesn't think the sky will fall if a cloned baby is born. In opposing laws against cloning, he was asked to testify in 2001 before Congress and in 2002 before the California Senate.

Constantly in demand for national television, Pence has been interviewed on Bobby Battista's "Talk Back Live" with Bobby Battista, "The Point" with Gretta von Susteren on CNN, "The Early Show with Bryant Gumbel" on CBS, "Wolf Blitzer's Washington" on CNN, as well as on National Public Radio's "Marketplace" and its "Weekend Edition." He has also been interviewed by TIME magazine, the New York Times, and most national publications. He has published in Newsweek, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal.

Pence has given the Soundings Lecture at Castleton State College, VT, the Thornton Lecture at Alma College, MI, the Seidman Trust Lecture at Rhodes College, TN, and the Hughes Memorial Lecture at West Liberty State College in WVA. He has talked at Princeton, Yale, and Stanford. He has given keynote talks about cloning at universities in Portugal, London, Switzerland, and Australia.

Pence teaches at the medical school at the University of Alabama in Birmingham (UAB), where he also directs a program for gifted undergraduates pre-admitted to UAB medical school. There, he has been voted Best Teacher.

He grew up in Washington, D.C., was graduated from the College of William and Mary cum laude in Philosophy, and earned his doctorate from New York University in 1974, where he worked on his dissertation under bioethicist Peter Singer, now at Princeton University.

Lacks Qualities of Texts Usually Used for Undergraduate Study

Pence's Medical Ethics was assigned to me to be used in an undergraduate Bioethics class. This book is inconsistent with other texts used in ethics and philosophy courses I have taken. Medical Ethics's four most obvious violations of academic quality are (1) citations that refer to non-academic, activist sources where an official or peer-reviewed citation is needed, (2) a lack of citations for statistics and empirical data important to arguments they are used for, (3) the use of adjectives such as 'evil' to describe controversial topics without an explanation of the adjective's philosophical origin (if one exists), and (4) controversial conclusions stated without foundation. If I were to turn in this book as my homework, it would be given back to me to complete. Prof. Pence does not have to do that, but because the book is read by students that do, he could have at least tried to make his work to the same standard we are held to as undergraduates.

Interestingly, the book just below this one on my Review page, Global Justice and Bioethics edited by Millum and Emanuel, is an example of an ethics book that meets all of the standards undergraduates are held to.

About the Author
James M. Henslin was born in Minnesota, graduated from high school and junior college in California and from college in Indiana. Awarded scholarships, he earned his Master’s and doctorate degrees in sociology at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. After this, he was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the National Institute of Mental Health, and spent a year studying how people adjust to the suicide of a family member. His primary interests in sociology are the sociology of everyday life, deviance, and international relations. He has published widely in sociology journals, including Social Problems and American Journal of Sociology. While a graduate student, Jim Henslin taught at the University of Missouri at St. Louis. After completing his doctorate, he joined the faculty at Southern Illinois University, Edwardsville, where he is Professor Emeritus of Sociology. He says, “I’ve always found the introductory course enjoyable to teach. I love to see students’ faces light up when they first glimpse the sociological perspective and begin to see how society has become an essential part of how they view the world.” Henslin enjoys reading and fishing. His two favorite activities are writing and traveling. He especially enjoys visiting and living in other cultures, for this brings him face to face with behaviors and ways of thinking that he cannot take for granted, experiences that “make sociological principles come alive.”

This entire textbook is online for free though. If you want a cheaper option just use the online book.

I am so glad to see the positive reviews for this text. I teach introductory sociology and have used this text for years. I love it! I'm so sorry the prices are so high; as faculty we have no control over that except that I can choose this paperback which is much cheaper than the bigger hardback texts that are around. I was delighted to read that it is helpful in studying for the MCAT!

Best Phrasebook/Dictionary out There

I am currently in Afghanistan. Over the last 7 months have tried almost every resource available for Pashto, though fewer for Dari (the resources for it are a little better, and frankly it's easier). This little book is by far the clearest, most practical and most up-to-date of any. In many of the current jobs here soldiers and civilians are interacting with Afghan government organizations, in which both Pashto and Dari are critical to successful communication.

I particularly like how the phrasebook assists the user in building sentences, which is great for actually learning to speak rather than just saying isolated words. I also like the map in the back.

It's also durable, and has survived numerous combat missions, dust, sun, being stuffed in a cargo pocket, etc.. It was even submerged in river water -- the ink didn't run and the glue held.

All I could ask for would be more words here and there, maybe an annex of useful proverbs, and a version that had everything in Arabic/Persian script.

Perfect Military Phrase Book

I have seen many Dictionary and Phrase books through out my several deployments in Afghanistan, but I found this Phrasebook one of the complete, accurate and useful dictionary so far. This book comprehensively covers military vocabulary and a range of generally relevant words in Dari & Pashto, the two main languages of Afghanistan.

Not a stand alone phrasebook

I can only really speak from experience for the Dari component (Pahsto doesn't get used much where I am), and so far it appears to be an accurate and useful dictionary (noting the regional variations pointed out by another reviewer). This book comprehensively covers military vocabulary and a range of generally relevant words, but don't expect much assistance from this work in discussing advanced non-military concepts. It is strictly a dictionary and the lack of a prominent or easily accessible 'ready reckoner' of useful phrases such as greetings or basic questions mean that if, like me, you struggle with anything but the most elementary elements of a foreign language you will need to carry a general phrase book or 'cheat sheet' as well. Still worth the money and a useful tool if you are likely to be doing partnering/mentoring work.

Dana Fear can imagine one hundred other places in the world she'd rather spend the rest of her senior year, but imagining won't change the fate that has come ot her. For Dana Fear is forced to spend the rest of her senior year at Shadyside High, with her cousin Jamie. The Fear name doesn't have a very good reputation in Shadyside, what with all of the evil history told about them, so Dana receives a very strange welcome. People either want to get to know her in an attempt to learn more about the Fear's, or they steer clear of her, treating her like a witch. But then she's invited to join the Night People. Dana realizes now that Shadyside isn't so bad when you're getting a buzz with some of your closest friends at a bar called Nights. That is, until the evil strikes again. Soon, the Night People are being picked off one by one. Dana tries to tell everyone that she's innocent, but all fingers are pointing at her. After all, she is a Fear...

Sequels are rarely better than their predecessors, but in Stine's case, MIDNIGHT GAMES outshines MOONLIGHT SECRETS - if that's even possible. MIDNIGHT GAMES, narrated by Dana Fear, introduces a new character who raises suspicion in every scene she appears in. Her high-fashion good looks, and I-could-care-less personality will make her appealing to readers; while the characters from the last book in the trilogy, MOONLIGHT SECRETS, will make readers feel at home with some old friendly faces. Overall, this is a fabulous sequel to MOONLIGHT SECRETS, that screams of more death, blood, and...evil.

It was a decent book good suspense. It started off as a little slow and got faster then went to slow and boring and confusing. It picked up and got to be faster and easier to understand.

There were these friends and they heard about this mansion and the family that had lived in the mansion. The family knew all about magic and witchcraft. Fun Sequel

A year has passed since the events in "Moonlight Secrets." The night people are still recovering from the death of one of their own. Jamie's cousin, Dana Fear, arrives in Shadyhigh. Dana is going to finish high school there. And yes, Dana is a descendant of the Fear family.

Dana starts hanging out with the night people - a group of teenagers who hang out at 3a.m.. She befriends Nate, who is still getting over Candy's death in "Moonlight Secrets." Strange events start to occur, and the body count rises. Is Angelic Fear back from the dead?

"Midnight Games" is a fun, fast-paced sequel. There are more screams and scares than the previous installment. It was clever to bring in Dana Fear, as she is connected to Simon and Angelic Fear. I can't wait to read the final book.
